1981 predictions eerily accurate!

Thinking of moving further inland.
[1981 climate change predictions were eerily accurate](<a href=“1981 climate change predictions were eerily accurate”>1981 climate change predictions were eerily accurate)

I know this has been reported widely in various news sources- but perhaps we all actually think the world is going to end on 12/21/12?

We don’t seem to be changing our behavior at all( on a large scale). What is it about people that makes them distrust their eyes & ears?
Fascinating.

I hope it isn’t ending in 2012!

When has the human race changed its behavior?

I want off the grid, that’s all. I want a cabin with solar and enough soil to grow a garden and some range for chickens. I have had it once before and I will have it again.

Ek, don’t you know? That is fake science made up by liberals to control our lives. Our world is just fine and God will make it so we can live here forever.

Seriously, I’ve had people say that to me at an all too uncomfortable rate. Honestly, I just don’t think people care. Or people want to believe a thirty second soundbite over scientific data. Maybe it’s easier for them to cope that way. I don’t know. It is scary though. However, humans aren’t the best at thinking ahead so it’s no surprise really.

But I like me some technology.
We’ve changed our transportation habits. We don’t drive for short errands like the grocery store. I took out all our grass and was slowly replanting with mostly native plants a few years ago, but since then our planting zone has changed and I think I will have to move some things.

I may not convince H we need to move east of the mountains, but I am sure going to do my best to keep my D from choosing Kirabati for her Peace Corp service.

“When has the human race changed its behavior?”

The day Al Gore invented the Internets. :)

Are these actual climate changes or naturally occurring cyclical weather patterns? Climate and weather are not the same thing. Also, it’s not like this hasn’t happened before, LONG before there were many humans on the planet. Much of the northern part of the US and all of Canada was once a massive glacier.

If you’re into technology, then you can also say that the old Jetsons cartoon is eerily accurate :).

^^^^^see what I mean?
It may be multicausal, but it is clear our weather is changing dramatically, which has already affected our ability to grow food & raise livestock.

How does saying "this was going happen anyway " make it easier to deal with?

Weren’t there actually TWO apocalypse dates in 2011 that passed without said apocalypse? All the non-believers were to be left here on Earth for six months of death and destruction followed by the descent into hell.

I think the main reason to worry about 12/21/12 is that all those computers that use the Mayan calendar need to be re-programmed.

The Mayan calendar says nothing about the end of the world… sigh…

But on Dec 22nd, I will lose my Mayan Apocalypse specials on H2. I like those shows :).
Maybe the Incans have something in hiding that Christian Europeans can misinterpret? :D

As a geology major in the times indicated, we were all busy worrying about the next ice age and freezing in the dark. My petrology classes taught that the earth would be out of fossil fuels within 20 years. (known recourses vs drawdowns ). Hmmm, we seem to have a huuuuuuge amount of natural gas now available.
Small trends in environment can multiply, I worry that arctic ice is going fast. It will affect weather trends but has happened before in human history.

emeraldkity4–see, that is the point, I don’t see that our weather is changing dramatically. To you have evidence for this? What changes have you noticed that haven’t happened in previous, naturally occurring weather patterns? Weather is not an exact science and it fluxuates from year to year which is why everything is based on averages because there is no “same” from year to year.

"That is fake science made up by liberals to control our lives. Our world is just fine and God will make it so we can live here forever. "

This is a scary thing for a well educated college student to say. With all the scientific climate studies we have done, it is unbelievable that a young person is not aware of what we are doing to destroy earth. My firm send most of top executives to be educated about sustainability, what we should be doing to help our environment, and at no time we were told God would make it Ok for us to live on earth forever.

Ok, take your second article posted–yes, last year there were massive snowfalls that resulted in flooding, but the same thing happened in 1996, 1992, 1985, 1965, etc., etc. This year, same spots, had less than 20" of snow and zero flooding. Again, these are normal, cyclical weather patterns. Are they really CLIMATE changes??

Old, I hope you know I was kidding. I don’t believe in God for one…

No I didn’t. :)

Jared Diamond’s 2005 book Collapse:How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed gives some explanations why many societies fail to see and ignore the warning signs which result in their ultimate demise. I think there are many examples today both in the natural world and the socio-economic world where strong leadership is called for and totally lacking. Sad.

You could begin with the [2007 IPCC report](http://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar4/wg1/ar4-wg1-spm.pdf), which summarizes a larger report. A couple of quotes:

(By “very likely”, the report means that there is a 90% probability or greater that the warming is caused by the activities of man.)

Yes, there have been times when the Earth was quite a bit warmer than today, due to natural processes. But we weren’t around to be affected by the consequences, such as vast reductions of land along coastlines. So, I’m unclear on what you are saying here.

But not in Seattle.
