After taking numerous prep classes and practicing in my blue book, I only received a 1990/2400 on my SAT with a 670 in reading and math and a 650 in writing. I want to take the SAT another time; however, i am worried I will score lower. On the other hand, my school district mandated that every student takes the ACT. I was taken by surprise on the day of it, and I took the test cold turkey. I got a 30 with a 32 in english, a 31 in math, 28 in science and reading, and a writing score of 08. I do understand that a 30 is roughly equivalent to a 2000 SAT score, so i actually have two questions. One, which test should i take (leaning towards ACT because i have room to prep), and two if I don’t retake anything, which score looks better to colleges such as the service academies, UNC chapel hill, and Cornell: a 1990 on the SAT or 30 on the ACT?

How can your school district surprise you with an ACT test as registration is required?
These 2 scores are about the same and both are around average for these 2 schools.

Pre-registration was the day before but i didn’t bother studying. I basically had no idea about this and didn’t worry about it at the time as i was strongly opposed to ACT then. Since i got my score back i realized i should probably pursue this. Should i risk it and take the SAT again or should i improve my ACT or do both?

I would say ACT only because it is much easier to actually study for. The biggest thing with the ACT from my experience is time management. Taking it “cold turkey” probably made you do a lot worse than if you actually had a plan going into the test.

Just think about how many questions you might have missed due to time. Now remember that each question is equal to about 1 point in that section. If you only get 2 more questions right a section, you have a 32 which would make Cornell a possibility.

Thank you for the insight. I think I’m going to take it again and hopefully receive that 32.
