Hi guys. It’s been a while since I last posted.

So my 1st year as an undergrad at UCSD is over.
My stats:
overall GPA: 3.27
science GPA: ~3.25
I took 1 class pass no pass (passed), and I am not proud to say it, but I dropped a chem class. No C’s though :-)

EC:
Fraternity
I work @ a Research Institute - (research intern is my official title) I just call my self a lab assistant. (i’ve basically been guaranteed a job for the rest of my undergrad years, and I think there will be opportunities for side-projects as well)
Clinical Volunteer - I plan to look into this starting next year
Shadowing - I think I could work something out with my uncle. Would that be okay? as long as no one else knows he’s my uncle (different last names)

Grades:
Alright, I admit they aren’t the best right now, but I partied a little much. I feel like I got alot of it out my system. Ideally, I could get it up to a 3.75ish. Realistically? At least a 3.5

Questions:
Will my drop affect me much? I really did overload that quarter, but the rest of my GPA for that quarter was 3.2ish.
EC: Am I missing anything with my current/future ECs?

You’re fine. You do need to step it up academically, but you haven’t ruined your chances by any means.

I’d also get involved a little more on campus. Ask the older guys in your chapter if there are any organizations they’re involved with that might be a good fit for you. Talk specifically to the guy who is most involved on campus and then anyone who is also pre-med. Those other pre-meds are important for other things too - which classes to avoid, which professors to avoid, as well as help on difficult subjects.

As for the shadowing. It’s not awful to shadow family members, but you might get a better experience from someone you don’t know so well. Ask your uncle if he has any partners or other docs he knows that would be interested in having a student shadow them. He can definitely be a great resource in helping you.

Also BigRed (or anyone else) do you recommend joining a science/health related club? I personally don’t want to cause I feel like it’s all alot of BS, but I mean if I need to I will.

Actually I wouldn’t mind checking out this club there bringing in next year “global medical brigades” basically you volunteer to go somewhere outside the country to help people out. I don’t know if this club will actually form, but that’s about the only club I would actually wanna join.

Any clubs you guys would personally recommend?

there are some of those clubs that are actually useful and you might have a genuine interest in …like ones that do community service or are trying to push for healthcare reform or something like that. But something like AMSA is total BS and they have like 100 “leadership” positions to cater to those premeds who only care about “playing the game” and not actually getting real experience.
