I have a really low GPA, I know. Do I still have a chance of getting into a 4 year university? Throughout high school I was the biggest slacker ever…was also depressed. I would get home and play video games (WoW :P), never did ANY homework or study for tests.

My SAT scores are 760 Math, 720 Reading, 570 writing.

I took several APs and got 3s on all of them, except for a 5 in BC calculus. Right now as a senior I am taking Multivariable calculus/ Differential equations at my hs and have a B+ in that class (really hard teacher). Never studied for any APs and blew off all the classwork that’s why I got 3’s on the exams.

I don’t do any sports, but am pretty athletic and run 5-6 miles a day. I only have like 80 volunteer hours which is the minimum for graduation, and don’t really do much of anything EC.

I know my chances of getting in to a decent college aren’t good, but should I even try? I am aiming for UMBC/UMCP.

Your scores are pretty good for a 2.0. I think you can still go into a 4 year university!! However, if you had EC’s, your chances would be greater…

"However, if you had EC’s, your chances would be greater… " I completely disagree. Only a handful of schools consider ECs whatsoever. The OP will search for a list of schools, none of which will consider ECs.

Flanighan: Make an appt w/your guid counselor and ask for suggestions. He/She should know what best matches your achievements. Good luck to you.

The usual main disadvantage is that you won’t be able to take upper division courses in math at a community college and have to wait until after transfer to take them. However, the Transfer Advantage Program described above does allow concurrent enrollment in courses at UMCP while you are at community college.

If you do go to a four year school as a freshman, you want to see if a four year school that will accept you has a good math degree program and courses, if that is what you are looking for. Some of the four year public schools in Maryland appear to be not very selective, although not all of them offer math as a major, and you will want to find out if those that do have sufficiently rigorous math courses.

I don’t think UM-CP is going to accept you because of your GPA. Your GPA and SAT scores speak volumes that you’re smart but don’t do what you’re asked to do.

Is that your weighted GPA? You’ve taken AP classes, so shouldn’t your weighted GPA be higher?

If you have your depression under control, are you prepared to “hit the books” from now on?
