Im a junior in high school right now and i am stressing about college. Right now i think i have a 2.3 gpa…Do you think i have any chance in getting into…
George Mason Uni.
James Madison Uni.
Virginia commonwealth uni.
Old Dominion Uni.
i hope to do really well on my SAT during the fall.
Also do you think knowing martial arts (kung fu) is a good extracurricular activity?

first of all, don’t stress out, it won’t do you any good. if you have enough money i would consider doing a PG year at a boarding school…even better, go to community college, pull your grades up and do junior/senior year at a 4 year college. but to answer your question, kung fu is a very cool and unique extracur. activity and you cant leave your fate in the hands of an SAT test, it won’t work, unless you are really smart or had a good tutor. But, it still is possible to get into those colleges, just do a good interview and a good application

Thanks for the reply (:
Do you know anyone whos gotten into a decent 4 year college with a 2.3 gpa?
I will try a community college as my last option…Community College isn’t really a option in my family.

wait are you a rising junior or a rising senior? because if you can manage to get all A’s this year then you can definitely get into a top college…bc once colleges see that you have changed then they will be willing to accept you…i know someone who got into a college with a 2.3 GPA but because he did sports, but no one personally

I’m a rising senior ): i had so many mistakes during my junior year.

are you really good at kung fu? or is it just something you do for fun…also do you have any connections with the colleges? maybe a family friend who donates money? if so, then try asking them if you can get in…also, do a PG year in boarding school, i hear those are helpful/colleges will know you are more prepared for college

I’m pretty good at kung fu. I’ve won many tournaments. Hopefully that would be a large plus on my application? My brother goes to George Mason uni, and i would also like to go there but we…don’t donate money to them. What is PG exactly? Also, would you think college would be more understandable if i had a tough time during my junior year with family conditions?

Why not? You (and your family) would save money if you get your General Education classes out of the way at a community college and then transfer to a 4 year college or university.

they will be impressed by kung fu, you may get accepted bc your brother goes there but not for sure…PG is a post graduate year or a gap year, for example you can do a post grad year at a boarding school and you would basically be like a senior…except taking different classes and enriching your course load. it’s not a bad thing at all and lots of people do it…also colleges like seeing that you care about working on your grades and after PG year they know you are more ready for college and will be much more willing to accept you…that is if you do well in your PG year, I don’t mean like A pluses with AP’s but just as well as you can do 3.7-4.0 and above range…

They think it is a disgrace to go to a community college.

Where would i take post gradu? Is it at my homeschool high school or something?

no, where are you from? east coast or west coast? and it’s usually at a boarding school, almost all boarding schools have a post gradute year…boarding schools (9th grade-12th grade + post graduate year)

Im on the eastcoast, virginia.

theres a lot of boarding schools on the eastcoast, EX: tilton, NMH, exeter, deerfield etc…) look any boarding school up and look for the postgraduate year.stuart hall school in virgina is another example, which is 8-12 and PG…schools usually only accept around 20 PG kids, maybe more or less depending on the size, but i think you could get in if you tell them youd really like to improve and how you would go about doing that/your high school experience wasnt great etc…

May I just comment on one thing here…I see so many high school kids and/or college fresh. that are not going for what they want or what’s best for them. This is your life not your parents, and if going to a CC is what will help bring you back up then so be it! CC’s are not bad at all! You save a lot of money and it is a hell of a lot easier to get into top universities after completing two years in a CC than applying right out of HS (if you didn’t do so well in HS) Don’t let your family get to you and make you believe that CC’s are bad. There are a lot of 4.0 grads that attend small local universities or CC’s because they can’t afford it…Going to a CC does not mean you’re dumb… Follow YOUR dreams and take the path that YOU need to because in the end it’s your life not theirs.

im really gonna have to think about PG. Hopefully i can find my way though. Thanks alot!

EileenM that is all very true! Hopefully i’ll overcome the fear of disappointing my parents more and just listen to what i need to get myself though life and get a well education. Thanks!

Try west virginia university or arizona state university, I know people who’ve gotten into wvu with 2.3s and below.
