2-3 minute monologue

How important is it that the monologue for musical theater audition actually be over 2 minutes in length?

It’s not. A two minute monologue is absolutely fine.

To be more precise, D was given advice that it was more important for the monologue to be most connected one and not to worry so much about the length. D has 3 monologues prepared, but longest is 1 1/2 minutes. Although most schools are looking for that length, I’m worried that the criteria for Emerson (and another school that says 2 min) will not be met.

Hi there! Don’t know if this helps, but I did the summer program at Carnegie Mellon this summer and from what I understand, they will never be offended if the monologue is slightly UNDER time, but will be offended if it is slightly OVER time for the first round bc all colleges are on very strict schedules with timeL… SO after talking to a friend who has assisted with the mt audition process at Emerson, the same applies… they want a good, strong monologue that shows who you are and that you connect well with material while staying grounded, but don’t want it to go over time as they are on a tight schedule… maybe this helps?

if this helps, i go to emerson and i got in using a two minute monologue. so is fine!

Thanks so much!

I timed my monologues and they’re all under 2 minutes…one of them is only approximately a minute & 15-20 seconds…is that too short?
