2.5 gpa first year Mechanical Engineering major.

I got a 2.5 gpa my first year of college. The learning curve from high school to college got a toll on me. My first semester was not too bad i got a 2 Bs 1 A and 1 C. second semester was worse for me 2 Bs and 2 Cs. my Cs were in Math and Political science. I would like to ask for any tips that would be helpful this coming up year that is about to start. I know i can do great and get high grades , but when it comes to tests anxiety kicks in and the material in the exams makes no sense at times. Also would like to know any tips and resources that could help me excel in Math . Thank you in advance

Go to professor’s office hours for extra help and utilize any academic support services on your campus for study strategies.

thank you will do this starting this semester i was hard headed and thought to myself i could do it with no help I was wrong. I’m using this as a learning experience to not slack off any more

  1. Using help you pay for at your college doesn’t make you a loser, it is getting bad grades because you didn’t that does

  2. Go to Professor’s office hours early in the semester. Ask this question: “I know this is a really difficult class-- what are some of the common mistakes students make and how can I avoid them?”

  3. If you have problems with the homework, go to Prof’s office hours. If they have any “help sessions” or “study sessions” or “recitations” or any thing extra, go to them.

  4. Form a study group with other kids in your dorm/class.

  5. Don’t do the minimum…for STEM classes do extra problems. You can buy books that just have problems for calculus or physics or whatever. Watch videos on line about the topic you are studying.

  6. Go to the writing center if you need help with papers/math center for math problems (if they have them)

  7. If things still are not going well, get a tutor.

  8. Read this book: How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less by Cal Newport. It helps you with things like time management and how to figure out what to write about for a paper, etc.
