Hi! My son will be applying to schools next year. Does anyone have an idea based on his statistics? He is unsure of what major he wants right now but won’t be applying undecided.
ACT:32
GPA: 2.9
Clubs: started his own current events club , has done a sport almost every trimester but it is required and he has no positions and no continuity.
Important facts about his application:
attended 3 HS (1 public, 1 boarding, and is now at a private school)
2.Wants D1 sports
Have you looked up the average entering GPAs for public colleges in your state?
You can find GPA distributions in each school’s Common Data Set, section C10.
Some of the CTCL member colleges might work.
Earlham for example is a very good school where about 8% of a recent freshman class had GPAs under 3.0.
That ACT score may help. https://ctcl.org/category/college-profiles/
However, many of these small colleges have high sticker prices.
Run the online net price calculators if you want to know how much need-based aid you can expect.
Many colleges have open admissions policies.
Google for “best open admission colleges”, “open admission colleges with dorms”, etc.
Why the 2.9? Family issues? Health issues? Will those be resolved and/or does he now have the coping mechanisms needed to perform decently in college?
What are his individual grades like? 2.9 in everything across the board, or routinely getting A grades in certain classes, and routinely failing others? Iffy grades and strong test scores is a pattern associated with ADD and other issues in the executive function family. Has he been screened for any learning disabilitites, and if so is he working on mastering the compensation skills that he will need for college?
What can your family afford to pay? Where do you live? If you can easily come up with out-of-state fees, there will be more options.
Your college counselor should be able to best guide you in this. Also if there are behavioural or other circumstances regarding the frequent change of schools, you will want to get a handle on how that will be discussed. Depending on the high school, a 2.9 may have good options in private colleges. At our private, students with a good ACT score and a 2.9 are admitted to national universities ranked 50-75 and LACS ranked 35-50.
Did you guys see that OP’s son wants Division 1 sports? Good shot at Mississippi, Mississippi State, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Florida International, West Virginia. Also check out South Florida, Texas Tech, Cincinnati, & Louisville.
OP, do you have regional or monetary limits? An early application to Bama can get you in. Ole Miss is a fantastic choice. My DS18 (29ACT, 2.8 GPA) was accepted to Ole Miss August 2017.
Iowa State is often overlooked.
Kansas or Kansas State, Mississippi State, Alabama, Iowa State, Mississippi all good options, Texas Tech is good too. Not much merit though with those statistics. My son is at Kansas State and loves it there (from a big city). He had very good merit awards there though.
As others have noted, lots of flagships should be in play. No, the “elite” flagships probably will be out of reach (UMich, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, U of TX-Austin), but at most others you should be competitive.
Are finances an issue? The OP doesn’t mention the need for FA, such as merit. Nor does she/he mention whether OOS is an option. I don’t want to read too much into the post. For instance, boarding school could suggest a family of means, but maybe not.
If money is no issue (or not a stumbling block sort of issue), lots and lots of D1 schools are in play. In fact, too many to mention. Football (Bama, Auburn, U of OK, TX A&M, Iowa, Minn, Oregon, TCU, LSU). Basketball (Kentucky, Kansas, IN, Michigan St., Purdue).
