2.9(ish) GPA...chance me?

Had to move this thread here I posted it in the wrong place before

Hey this is my first time on this site so here it goes…also, I know I am not the brightest student so please don’t come here if you are going to bash me and make fun of my stats:

-I am just about to finish my Junior year of High School

-I did OK Freshman year, bad Sophomore year, and very good Junior year (hopefully they see my upwards trend)

-About a 2.9 unweighted I THINK, but I am not sure; I will update when it recalc’s

-Taking AP Psych and two Honors English courses next year

-Took the SAT for the first time this spring got a 1570/2400 but I am gonna take it again next fall and I think I can get 1800+ because I am going to kill myself training for it this summer. Also gonna take the ACT.

-Two very strong letters of recommendations from teachers I am very close with and have great relationships with

-I am almost done with a very good and well written essay (or so my parents/teachers tell me) about how having cancer as a kid (Clear Cell Sarcoma of the Kidney if you want to know) has impacted me today.

-Not many ECs but: I have been involved with YoungLife for about 2 years, Neighbor to Neighbor, Soup Kitchens, Co-creator of the “App Club” (we make apps for smartphones/iPods), Special Olympics, I play guitar and take lessons but I haven’t been able to find any opportunities with that, and I am going to try to get a job next year if I can find one (jobs are very hard to get for a 16 year old boy in my town).

Colleges

-UCONN: the main school of my state but I heard it is very tricky to get in now a days.

-St. Michaels College: my parents went there.

-UNH

-Emory: BIG REACH but you only miss the chances you never take haha so I will give it a shot

-UGA

-Florida Schools: FSU, UCF, USF, University of Miami, Rollins, University of Tampa

-University of Denver

-ASU/U of Arizona: I am not sure about these since I heard they are big party schools (then again, I think a lot on my list are party schools O.O) and I do not drink/smoke/do drugs but my guidance counselor put them on my list so I should still check them out. Party Schools do not bother me by the way, I am sure I can still fit in fine considering I think I am the only sober kid in my whole school and I still have friends and have fun.

So yeah, these are just some schools that seem interesting to me. Please give me advice and suggestions for schools and help my search become a little easier! I am very scared for college as well, so if you have any tips about the transition from HS to college and college life please let me know! I will always check this site so I can swiftly respond to you guys! Thank you!

Oh I forgot to mention I am also considering History or Psychology as my major although I am not sure and I am open to anything at this point.

I’ll be frank with you in that theres a small chance you’ll get into either FSU or Miami. You’re OOS for them, Miami is a very competitive private school to start, and your GPA and SAT combined put you far away from UM. FSU only has 11% of its student body out of state, and their admissions standards are “higher than that of in state” for OOS students.

Even if you got an 1800 on your SAT, your GPA is going to handicap you for most of the schools on that list. Despite what the people on this forum say, almost every single college admissions person will tell you the best predictor of success in college is your GPA and school record. I would look at more schools like St. Michaels College

Hey! Thank you for your response! What about Tampa or Rollins? On Naviance (the website my school uses to show prospective students the GPA/SAT/ACT of schools students from my school have been accepted to…I do not know if you are familiar with this or not) the GPA and scores of the kids accepted there seem to closely match up with my current ones.

I do think that you will have a good shot at Tampa and I don’t really know much about Rollins but if your grades and scores match up with people that were accepted from your school then go for it. As of now your gpa is pretty low especially considering your courses dont appear to be too rigorous. Also your SAT score will keep you out of most of the schools on the list as well as being oos. If you manage at least an 1800 you should be in good shape for UNH and you will definitely get into Arizona and asu probably evenneith your current SAT score. I dont really know anything about Denver or UGA. I think with an 1800 and close to all A’s first semester of senior year you will probably have a decent shot at both ucf and usf. You already know your chances for Emory so no need to repeat it. As far as uconn goes you will not be accepted to the main campus with your current stats. It is a good thing that uconn is your in state school but I would aim for at least above an 1800 closer to 1900 to offset your low gpa. It is getting harder to gain admission to the storrs campus because they are getting more applicants and generally more high performing ones. I think they received around 30,000 apps this past admissions year.

Thank you so much for all that info, invader! It is extremely helpful!

Bumpppppppppp

Another Bump

App Club sounds pretty cool. Anyways, onto the chances.

UConn: low reach
SMC: not familiar, but maybe a safety?
UNH: low reach
Emory: Sorry, but with that GPA, you won’t get in.
UGA: low reach
Denver: high match
ASU: match
UA: match

As for the FL schools, I think you have decent chances at a few of them (especially Rollins), but not UMiami. Your GPA is really what’s hurting you here.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1356903-chance-me-lacs-few-universities-will-chance-back.html

^ are you chances based on if he receives an 1800 plus on the SAT? There is no way UNH is on the same level as UConn and UGA. I agree with the rest of the list however given that your SAT is an 1800 plus.

Yes, absolutely, my chances are based on the assumption that scores will be improved.

Hey everyone my I just found out my GPA and it is a 2.8 now…a little less than what I thought it was going to be.

Being a New Hampshire native, I have to defend UNH from an above poster and say that it is indeed a very good institution. I agree that it would be a low reach as I know kids from my in state competitive high school that were rejected with 3.0+. By all means go for it! Like you said, You only miss the chances you dont strive for!

I just got my report card for the year in the mail today. I did a lot better this year than my previous years (only got one C+) and my junior year GPA is a 3.23.

But my cumulative is still really low (2.8), which I am worried about.

Oh and I am also looking at James Madison University too…if anyone wants to chance me for that

James madison is a very nice school and I am unsure exactly about transferring there but for freshman admissions your gpa would still be pretty low It is definitely a mid reach. Actually I just looked up for transfer, they accept about 50 percent of applicants so that is a good sign.

What about schools in Texas? I am starting to look there.
