Hey guys. I’m going to be moving into college in a little bit more than 2 weeks now. I got something the mail from the college saying that they offer a 2-day trip to go on a “field trip” and meet new incoming freshman. I think this is a great opportunity to get my foot in the door and meet people prior to moving in however, I got something going on during those 2 days that I cannot cancel.

My question to you guys is this: will I be behind schedule when it comes to meeting people since I cannot go on this trip? I’m afraid everyone is going to know each other except me because I didn’t go on this field trip with the school. Basically, do I still have opportunities to meet people? Maybe I’m just to anxious or worried about this but I’d appreciate your responses!

The entire freshman class will probably not go on the trip. I doubt more than 5% will go. Using that knowledge, most people will be in the same boat as you when you get to school. Even if most people go to the trip (which they won’t obviously), one trip won’t define all friendships made this year.

When you go to college, please use more common sense. You’re growing up now.

When my sister started college, she went on a freshman trip with other people in her year for a few days before moving into the dorms. Once she got back, she spent most of her time resting and sleeping since she was tired from the trip and didn’t try to get to know anyone on her floor during the first week. She told me she regretted it because the people she met on the trip she never ran into much after it was over, and it was harder to get to know the people on her floor because she had missed the first week where everyone had met and bonded.

Don’t worry about not going. Just make it a point to meet people when you move on campus and get to know others by being involved in things you enjoy. The trip is a cool idea, but you won’t be “behind” if you opt out.

It sounds like an attempt to prevent incoming freshman from partying because the amount of parties are always notoriously high during the couple of days before school starts.

It is highly unlikely that the entire freshman class is going on those trips. It’s fine. You’re not going to become a social outcast because of something like this.
