2 Oscars for Ethan Coen '79

princeton alum ethan coen took home two golden statues at the 80th academy awards last night, including best director and best adapted screenplay (along with brother joel) for “no country for old men” (“no country” was also named best picture, but that award goes by rule to the producer(s), not the director of the winning film). ethan and joel are better known as “the coen brothers,” writers, directors, and editors also of “fargo” and “the big lebowski,” among other critically acclaimed films. the brothers won an oscar in 1996 for best original screenplay for “fargo.” ethan majored in philosophy at princeton and wrote his senior thesis on wittgenstein.

correction: the coens actually co-produced “no country,” along with the gentleman who accepted the award, so they each earned a third oscar last night. other princetonians earning oscars last night were todd wider ’86 and jedd wider ’89, producers of the best documentary film “taxi to the dark side,” which explores the arrest, torture, and death of an afghani taxi driver at an american air base.

Interesting didn’t know Ethen Coen went to Princeton. Congrats to him and his bro!
