2007 Student Income

Daughter has worked in 2007 summer for an internship and has received a W-2 from the company. She is receiving a need-based aid from Harvard. In addition, she has received various aids in outside scholarships. When she went to her term bill account and saw a 1098 from Harvard, she has following notice

Harvard Student Receivables

Tax Documents for Student Receivables

Our records indicate that you do not have any Tax Documents at this time.

Her term bill appears as follows:

Thus taxable scholarships amount is =41350 – 39435= 2,915.00

If I deduct the charges for the books and computers and printer etc. then $2,915 is the taxable income that I need to add to her summer internship income. Am I right to say that?

In essence, what I am including and what I am not including in determining taxes on these scholarships? Also, for scholarships included in Spring 2008 bill but listed as being received in 2007, do I need to include these on the 2007 taxes?

I know the room rent and board are taxable income.

Are the following items tax-deductible or not? 1. Blue Cross/Shield Health Insurance, 2. Student Health Fee – College, 3. Student Services Fee – College, 4. Undergraduate Council Fee

Does one need 1098-T, from school or from private instituions that have given money? It is getting pretty confusing to know all these. How does it work?

I think you should wait until you get the 1098-T and work from that – they should be ready by the end of the month.

Re the 1098T: You might want to go to http://www.1098t.com/</a> and see if you can access it electronically from there – many colleges participate in that service so there is a good chance you will be able to pick it up there.
