2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

@alihaq

I’ve gotten emails from random colleges, and some mail.

I’ve been getting a lot of those emails and mailings since Sophomore year when I first took the PSAT. I think if you check yes for “Student Search Service” on the PSAT form they’ll just send you information from colleges based on your profile. I think a lot of it is junk though.

Wow… that’s really weird, I haven’t received anything yet in my email. Maybe because I put the wrong address on my PSAT, it’s being held up from being sent to colleges or something? Man this is weird, I’ll just have to wait and find out…

I’ve never recieved anything either. We are in the same boat.

I did quite a bit worse than I had expected to, argg.

77/70/68 for a total of 215

I made of the stupidest mistakes too, which is what really bothers me. For example, I wrote that 250x100=250. I also misread a figure and thought that the value for a certain angle was the value for another angle. And in the locker problem, I skipped over the fact that it had to be even. In the W section, I circled the correct answer then changed my answer. How much stupider could I get?? I don’t understand how I did so poorly in the W section, it’s usually my strongest section. On the last two BB tests I’ve taken, I scored 800 both times. This is so frustrating!
I can only pray that CA’s cutoff will miraculously go down 3 points, but I highly doubt it.

I’m taking the SAT in January and I really hope that I do better.

Looks like Guidance is being a stuck-up in every school…

A quick question - if the cutoff is let’s say 200, is 200 still eligible for NMQST?

“A quick question - if the cutoff is let’s say 200, is 200 still eligible for NMQST?”

When we say that the cutoff is 200, we mean that scores greater than or equal to 200 are eligible.

Wait a minute…
nmsfsat, you actually thought the SAT was a joke compared to the PSAT? Wow, do you want to trade? I’ll gladly take your December scores, then…I’m not so confident on mine. Just wallowing in the low standards of pining for a 2100 or above. The possibilities for me getting a 2300+ is, like, silverturtle somehow failing his PSATs. :)

I find it funny than someone like nmsfsat would find the PSAT harder than the SATs. It’s like applying to your local crapmmunity college and then send an app to Harvard as a last resort haha…btw this girl in my school actually did do that. (puzzled)

Ah well. Good luck everyone still waiting…!!

80CR/79M/73W = 232.

Ugh. The writing curve was NASTY. I hope this is enough for RSI/etc.

^ Great job Vaeliant! And yeah, I thought the Writing curve was pretty tough this year too, considering that there were so many ambiguous/poorly worded questions…

I’m sorry if this comes over as a stupid question, but I’ve gotten several conflicting reports: I took the PSAT last year, and have an account on College Quickstart. Will I be able to access my scores online before my school hands them out? And if so, how?

The district I live in waits until after Winter Break to give out the reports, and I don’t know if I can survive waiting another month…

“considering that there were so many ambiguous/poorly worded questions…”

I didn’t really think there were any ambiguous or poorly worded questions. The “were to” question I missed was perfectly legitimate.

There was, however, a perfectly clear and well worded question that, rather notably, was scored with the wrong response as the correct one. :)

@randomazn14

I know it is wierd that my SAT was way better than my PSAT. I think it can be attributed to the fact that I was really nervous for the PSAT, but for the SAT I hardly studied and did not worry at all.

It is so disappointing after doing so well on last year’s test and practice tests (which are totally unreliable). All 7 writing questions I missed were after #25. TERRIBLE.

^ Haha silverturtle… tell me about it. That discussion’s occupied more than just a few pages of this thread. =P

Hmm. Maybe you just didn’t find them ambiguous, I guess. I did think there were more confusingly worded question on this year’s PSAT than on last year’s… but that’s probably just me.

^ Not to press, but can you share some of them?

Like the infamous “disdain/resentment” one in the passage about the Indian boy… that one seriously annoyed me. And then there was the one in the Math section that showed a circle with two lines intersecting in the middle, and asked for x, given that it was the average of the shaded regions… or something to that effect. I know several of you are laughing at me about that last one right now (math isn’t my strong suit, as you can tell), but I found all the math questions on last year’s PSAT to be a lot easier than that… I understand that “easy” is subjective, so none of this may be relevant to you at all haha.

EDIT: Which one was the “were to” question? More specifically, what did it talk about?

“Which one was the “were to” question? More specifically, what did it talk about?”

It was the question talking about separating recyclables. Because it’s the unreal present conditional tense (as indicated by the presence of “would”), the subjunctive should be used.

Silverturtle: Could you post the complete sentence (if possible)?

Fledgling: Could you elaborate on the circle problem? I don’t remember ever averaging together shaded areas of a circle… (but then again, we took the test almost two months ago)

Haha I don’t remember much about it anymore either, except that its correct answer was 60. I put 90 (still have no idea why I did that)… I was going to go back and look over it after I finished everything else, but then I ran out of time.

60 sounds kind of familiar… argh I just want my test results!

Anyway here’s a compiled list of what I know I missed so far:

CR:
-disdain/resentment (put disdain…)
-halcyon/onerous (put feckless/tedious)
-Another question about the indian boy (don’t remember exactly)

M:
None

CW:
-so to speak

With just those the best possible I can get is a 232, but I probably made some dumb mistakes as well…
