I am curious to hear feedback on today’s Tisch Admitted Students’ Day. My son was disappointed that there was no student representative from the Strasberg Studio. There were three students from Playwrights Horizon. Most of the questions were directed to these three students from incoming students also assigned to that studio. I was also not able to find any available staff member to tell me anything about the Strasberg Studio.

I could not attend the gathering. (I had a show–dedication to the theatre I suppose :)) Could anyone please inform me of any pertinent information they gave that is not provided on the NYU website? Also, is it possible to visit campus later in the month?

Msmia, my son had the exact same comment/complaint about questions directed to Playwrights reps and nobody from his studio, Adler.

It iz particularly unfortunate that there would have been nobody from Strasberg, as I suspect that a good number of kids attending the event yesterday were ones who were assigned an acting studio after being declined by CAP21. A lot of those students seem to have received a Strasberg assignment.

What to do? Well, it is possible for students to request an NYU student contact from their program through the Admitted Student Resource Page link that was e-mailed to them. I am advising my son to specifically request an Adler student via that resource. He said he is also willing to try to find Adler students through Facebook.

Kids are normally shy about approaching strangers on Facebook, but this is different.

Good luck!

AmbitiousMind, I will go through my notes and see if I can ID anything that you might find helpful. I can say that the general session for Tisch students was a charming wooing session for the most part…in a beautiful auditorium, yummy pastries set up outside, lots of praise and flattering words directed at the students, the screening of a wonderful and hilarious prize-winning student animated film.

An assistant Tisch dean asked, “How many of you are here because your parents forced you to study the arts?”…which was of course met by gales of laughter.

The students were asked to stand, and they were applauded by all. Then the parents were asked to stand and the students were directed to applaud us. At a couple of points, both my son and I had tears in our eyes.

Then there was a panel of reps from various offices such as Tisch student affairs, financial aid, counseling, etc, who answered question from parents (after the kids were already off in their individual groups) and they gave a strong impression of lots of support for families/students and “really caring.” :-)

As for visiting Tisch in coming days, you’d need to call and ask.

When we visited Tisch when my D was in tenth grade (she applied to college in 11th grade), we asked if we could meet with a current student from CAP21, ahead of our visit. So, before the Tisch information session, we had an appointment with a CAP21 student who answered questions and it was great.

At the admitted student day four years ago, I know the kids were broken up to attend a session on Tisch Drama. I can’t recall if they also broke into studio groups but there were current students from various studios there. After that, there was an open reception in the Tisch lobby area and current students with name tags on were milling about and we were able to ask a student from our D’s intended studio questions there too.

If you still have a visit coming up, request a meeting through Tisch with a current student from your studio. As well, go visit the studio and approach some current students in the lobby areas of those studios and most would be willing to talk to an incoming froshie and answer questions.

From my notes on Accepted Students Day:

Faculty members live in freshman dorms. Activities like seeing an opera, discussing it.

Charming, funny lady from Financial Aid. She won a distinguished administrator award and has nickname “Diva of financial aid.” She said, “We will laugh and cry together. We have got your back and we will get through this together.” She gave her personal phone number and e-mail address. AmbitiousMind, PM me and I’ll share them if you want.

A student mentor is assigned in early summer and there will be constant access to that person.

Sunday Aug 30 opening day. Orientation Aug 31 through Labor Day.

On June 15 they register for classes online. No advising necessary because Tisch first year curriculum is fixed for all (?) programs. A May e-mail will explain all.

All communications from the school will be to the student via e-mail…not to parents. They have to check their nyu.edu email a lot! Even the bill is sent to them. But the student can give permission for a copy of the bill to be sent to parents.

The school will contact the family only if they think there is a safety issue. We can tell them stuff but not vice versa. This is based on a privacy law. Same at all colleges.

NYU has the largest campus police force in the US. NYU is in the 6th police precinct which is the safest police precinct in New York City.

Students won’t know housing placement until early Aug.

These were the things that struck me that I wrote down because I wanted to be able to remember them. Possibly Mrsmia or another parent would have something to add.

Soozievt, it’s interesting that in your year there was an open reception in the Tisch lobby with current students milling around with name tags on. If such a thing occurred this year, it was not announced in the general session and my son did not know of it.

If my son is not successful in satisfying his curiosity about Adler through contacts over the internet, I guess we will need to go up again…on a school day…as you suggested.

NJTheatreMom…
Try these few things…

1) keep asking on this site if any current Adler students or parents are participating and if so, PM or email them with your questions or do it on the board, either way…I have seen some Adler parents participating here…off the top of my head…actressmom is one of them

2) call Tisch and ask how you can arrange to speak with a current Adler student

3) call Adler directly and ask how you can arranage to speak with a current Adler student…make sure to explain your son is admitted to Adler for next fall

4) go visit Adler (though do some calls first) since you live in South Jersey (hey, I grew up in South Jersey!) and my experience at ANY college is that you can approach students and say you are an incoming student or prospective student and ask questions…most students like to help…they were once in your shoes…I have visited many colleges with both my kids and recall doing this a LOT…and if you do it RIGHT at Adler studio…there likely is a reception area (I have not been there but there is one at CAP21 for example and in Strasberg), talk to kids milling about and ask the receptionists to help you out in this regard if you have to

5) try any Tisch Drama or Stella Adler Facebook groups…have your son post his questions and he may very well get responses to questions and he may take it to private message and ask if he can call them or email them or visit

I just am addressing some things you have posted about Tisch but just want to say that BU, which your son is also considering, is a great program too. My D has a friend who is a senior in that program. She did a semester through Tisch Drama in Johannesberg in fact.

One more thing…I don’t want to be inundated with people contacting me but NJTheatreMom…I just remembered…one of my clients last year is a freshman in Adler. If you email me, I could ask this boy if he would be willing to be contacted by an accepted Adler student and if so, could give your son his email. I’d have to ask him first but will not do so until you email me and I’d need at least your son’s first name so that if I do contact this boy, I can tell him who to expect may contact him.

Thanks so much Soozie. I’m sure this list of options will help other students too. I will e-mail you right now.

njtheatremom, I happened to be talking to a friend earlier today who knows a few kids who have been accepted to Tisch this year. A couple of them were discussing with her how many kids they’ve already ‘met’ through the Tisch Adler class of 2013 on Facebook. I’m not a Facebook user but I’m sure your son would have no difficulty in locating this group. Apparently, there are also related groups listed where he’d be able to also talk to current Adler students. I imagine that this would be the case with all of the Tisch studios so those of you who weren’t able to find anyone at the event yesterday to answer your questions should be able to do it this way with relative ease.

Would anyone that attended the Tisch accepted student day be willing to share any of the info shared by the playwright’s kids about the playwright’s studio? I’ve been looking for information all over the place, but their site hasn’t been updated in two years and there’s not much info on it anywhere else.

See post #7…same advice.

Nabende - You can do a search on this website of “Playwrights Horizons” and will get some hits. Also there is a Playwrights Facebook group and many of the members are current students.

I agree. I think they should have had a rep. from each studio along with a handful of kids from each studio. There were about 70 kids there for drama and I think they all had questions that weren’t being answered. We came home and on Monday called the NYU Strasberg Rep. She was great and answered many questions. She also had a recent grad call us as well as my daughter being in touch with another student through some other method. I can tell you that when we left there on Saturday, D. was completely confused and felt like the CAP leftovers. After speaking with the appropriate NYU rep., we feel much better and she will be going there next fall.

racmom, could you please give me the contact information of the Strasberg rep you spoke to? I would really like to get more information too.

Racmom, I am glad your daughter got the info she needed to be happy about Strasberg. It sounds like a very good studio for a student interested in MT, because of all that Srasberg in particular and Tisch in general have to offer to such students.

My son is more oriented toward straight acting and is trying to decide between Tisch/Adler and the excellent BFA acting program at Boston University.

Since the Tisch Accepted Students Event, he has been very busy with school and play rehearsals…plus we were out of town three days this week so that he could check out BU, where we had never visited.

Now I am urging him to get in touch with the Adler students whose contact info we are in possession of, so that he can compare what they say with what he experienced at BU. This is the one “missing link” in our information chain. This will be impossible for him really to make a final decision until he hears personal testimonials about Adler.

I am impatient, but I know he will get the communicating done…in his own good time! :-)

NYTheaterMOM, did your son decide on BU? Somehow I missed that----congratulations to him! Great town and campus!

Thanks, Skipsmom. Yes, we went up to New York and visited Adler Studio and my son communicated extensively with two current students and one former student about it. Based on this research, he decided that it would not be a good fit for him at this time…though they obviously have an excellent program.

More details in posts #71-77 in the “NYU vs BU” thread on the Theatre/Drama Majors forum.

Yes, he is very excited to be attending Boston University!

Congratulations to him again, and I hope he will share his freshman insights :)

One thing s loved about BU was the very open affects of the people we met there, both in and out of the theater department. It seemed like a program where a student can grow in whatever way he is lead, either by his own desires or by the curriculum. I know you must be very relieved that the decision has been made.

Yes, Skipsmom, it is SUCH a relief for the decision to have been made!!

My son became increasingly interested in CC during the past few weeks. He was reading quite a few posts during the height of his decision-making process, and he ultimately became a member under the screen name “YoungThespian.”

He has posted on the “Audition preparation advice for Juniors” thread in the Theatre/Drama Majors forum. See his post #20…it contains advice that at least one person found helpful.

My son will probably be pretty busy next year, but I will try to keep an eye out for questions here and pass them along to him if he doesn’t see them himself.
