2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

well Ive got waitlisted at one place and Im also getting that ‘silent response’ from another school which Im hoping is that they did not see my email or my email got sucked in some kind of black hole…

But kinda feels nice that Iam not alone in this might uphill battle

Although when is april coming?

sigh what should I do if the only school I got into is the one I least want to attend? Should I decline and apply again in two years (after doing a post bac/retaking the GRE), or just go to the school that wants me…

@nuttersbutter

Im kinda in ur situation whr the school I got into the lab I really want to go is full so even though I got acceptance it doesnt really feel like a acceptance…

on the brightside its only middle of March
another month before apr 15.

Son got his acceptance to NYU Sackler Biomed today-- first choice of the ones he chose to interview at.
In a nutshell-- bio major, started in engineering but realized early it wasn’t a fit.
GPA 3.4, Major GPA 3.7 GRE 800 math, 640 verbal, no subject tests. Microbiology TA, no undergrad research (too many students, not enough spaces), summer and Sr. yr. job at a cell culture company, with poster session at national bioscience symposium.
Applied to 16 schools (hey, you have to dream)
Silent treatment from UChicago, Northwestern, Penn, Columbia,
Polite response from WashU, Rockefeller, and Gerstner (Sloan Kettering)
Waitlisted at Brown
Interview invites at Rochester, Rutgers, UMCP (all declined), Carnegie Mellon (declined because of timing conflict with first choice NYU), Pitt, Einstein, NYU, Northeastern
Accepted at Northeastern, Einstein, and NYU ! (still no word from Pitt, but it’s been a month)

He needs to let it sink in before he accepts, but I think NYU is a done deal. Thanks to everyone on the board (I lurk alot).

My final update:

Accepted: Vanderbilt (with fellowship), Duke (with Fellowship), U penn, Emory, Medical College of Georgia
Silent treatment (no interview): UNC Chapel Hill
Rejection w/o interview: Wash U
Wait listed after interview: Northwestern
No response after interview: Drexel, U chicago
invited to interview but I declined: Wake Forest, St. Louis University

Attending: Vanderbilt!

Some of you may remember I was applying with my husband applying to Medical School. he was accepted to SLU, MCG and Emory. He was also offered to be a part of Teach for America in Nashville which works out perfectly and he has accepted as Vandy was my top choice!

I was absolutely appalled by my experience with Emory IMP. Feel free to Private message if you’d like details. I was also extremely surprised by how much MCG impressed me with their facilities and research - I would highly reccommend other people apply (especially internationals - they said about 1/2 their class is international).

Just curious, what was so bad at Emory IMP?

Still nothing? I’ve basically become bored of all of it now. How’re you?

Accepted: University of Michigan PIBS, University of Pittsburgh, University of Iowa, Washington University in St. Louis
No response after interview: U Chicago
invited to interview but I declined: Northwestern University

I was applying with my fiance, who is going to medical school. He’s been accepted by University of Michigan, University of Pitt, University of Iowa, and University of Chicago

Attending: University of Michigan (probably - depending on how financial aid turns out)

GCN2, congrats to you too and have fun in NYC :)

Well I’ve been watching this forum for the longest time, and thought I’d post my results for you folks.

Graduated 2006 University of Washington 3.5 GPA in Micro. Did undergrad research in clinical lab. Worked since in a cancer research center. Published in 2 peer-reviewed journal, 2 more pending. GRE: 800 Q, 600 V, writing 5.5.

Applied to 14 programs in Immunology (or umbrella program that had strong immuno dept)

Interview invites: UW-Seattle MCB program, UColorado Denver, UChicago, WashU, UMich, UW Seattle Immuno program, UVA (phone, decided not to do). Attended all recruiments.

Rejected post interview: UW immuno (since they knew I got into UW MCB, they decided not to offer spot, even though I could rotate with all immuno faculty as MCB student)

Rejected w/o interview: UCSF, Berkely, Stanford, Yale, UPenn

Silent treatment (expecting rejection letter soon): Hopkins, Princeton, UC Denver.

Accepted immediately: UW MCB, UMich

Accepted after 1 week on waitlist: UChicago, WashU

Final choice: WashU Immunology.

Happy to address question. Good luck to people still waiting. I’d give them a call if you’re really interested in the program and let them know. It helped with WashU (my top choice going into interviews)

Congrats to everyone who’s done!

You guys should see my “March Madness” application bracket with the 14 schools I applied to (had to add Phoenix University and Clown College to make even 16).

@jacks06

how long after UChicago and WashU interviews was it before you were waitlisted?

going to my first choice - Pitt IBGP  anyone else??

@bmsgirl

I went to the first interview weekend for both programs. saw some interviewees afterwards and they told me they already got into UChicago already, while I hadn’t heard anything. Then after the 2nd interview weekend, I got an email from the head of immune. probably actually 3 weeks later after interviews.

For WashU, same deal, some interviewees told me they got in already after the first recruitment weekend. I got an email last week saying they were interested but couldn’t give me a solid yes until they figure out how many slots were available, and wait like a couple more weeks. I didn’t want to string the other schools along, so I wanted to know what the deal was. I called them today, and they were basically working out how many slots they had for the DBBS program (not just immunology), and said I was waitlisted, but 1st on the list and I should probably expect another 10 days wait time before I hear if anything opens up. An hour later I got a pleasant call from admissions and they said they opened some slots and I was in. I did stress to WashU during my emails and phone call to the dean of admissions that WashU was my top choice and if they offered me a spot, I’d be in St. Louis in a heartbeat. IDK if that helped, but I’m glad I didn’t wait 10 more days to hear back. in conclusion ~2.5 weeks after interviews b4 i heard back and ~3.5 weeks for decisions.
my impression was that they offered spots to highly qualified applicants and start a wait list. Then if they have enough slots open (ie, if cancer biology ends up getting more withdraws, then another department would open up more slots), they’d start going down the wait list. IDK, i may be totally wrong, but that was my speculation.

I’d give them a call and be honest with them and your situation. WashU’s people were super nice, esp. the Dean. He was literally on the phone with the people who looked into my file an hour after my call and probably made the calls to get the ball rolling on my waitlisted application.

Is Uchicago your top choice?

Yes, U Chicago is my number one choice. I am from Chicago and really would like to return after being away. I have heard nothing since the interview. so I assume that means only bad. however, i should probably call them and let them know how i feel. if it really is my number one choice, i should try all my options before giving up.

Hey guys, when do you send your decline letter? If you decide your mind to attend a specific school, do you send decline letters for other schools immidiately? It that case, do you also send personal decline letter to the professor who keeps in touch with you after the interview?

You should probably send your decline letters as soon as possible, to allow students to be accepted of the waitlist. And yes, include the professor who contacted you. It’s a nice thing to do.

Regarding wait-lists, is it considered appropriate or at least not harmful to e-mail or call the schools later on about your status on the list? I interviewed for the Vanderbilt IGP earlier in March and was put on the wait-list, and haven’t heard anything for a couple of weeks. I have other acceptances and I was considering contacting Vanderbilt to ask if there had been any updates or when I should expect to hear something. Also, is it better to call or e-mail for an update? I’d rather call but considered that an e-mail might seem less intrusive or pushy.

I let my faculty contacts know I am declining like hours after I got accepted to my first choice and sent the official declining letters as soon as I got to them (I used my parents addresses for everything but I don’t live with them). So, yeah, as soon as possible is the best way to go.

It sucks being waitlisted, so I’d rather alleviate that as much as possible!

Perhaps this is a moot point, but I was accepted to a school that did not offer either an online form or a letter to mail back regarding my decision. A few days after recruitment weekend, I received an email from the area’s faculty coordinator telling me to let her know when I made my decision. I ended up deciding to go to another program, so I emailed her as soon as I knew for certain and then sent a separate email to a POI who had taken the time to meet with me. Is that enough (i.e. “official” enough)?
