2010 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

I think you should both come to UCLA with me
But seriously - I’m excited about UCLA because of the extensive resources (7 scanners!) and because there are so many faculty I’m interested in working with. And UCLA routinely ranks very well in terms of funding, sources differ and I’m sure there’s side issues to consider (a few rockstars that bring in a lot of money?) but here’s one:

Congrats on having such great choices!

Hi Emily!! I switched per your advice to this forum, and you are right this board is better, since you give such good advice, I should probably listen and come to UCLA. Have you crossed your T’s, dotted your I’s and made it official yet?

Hi Shebelle,

I actually loved UCLA! Their imaging facilities are amazing and I love that I have so many different choices in terms of labs I could work in. I felt the community was very supportive. During the interview weekend the neuro department chair assured us that he was there to personally support us if we had an issue with our classes, conflicts with our PI or issues with funding. I find it really impressive that such a large institution is able to be so personal.
It was also great to know the students at UCLA have very balanced lifestyles; which does not seem to be the case at other schools.

How did you like Emory? I have heard mixed reviews…

-W

Emily,

Yes I was blown away by UCLA’s resources as well. Are you going via the neuro program?

prettywitty, really, I didn’t get the supportive vibe from ucla so much, def not unsupported, but that is good to know that you felt that way. I really liked emory, none of the faculty research really grabbed my interest though. I thought Emory was an extremely well put together program and I felt the supportive atmosphere there and that is why I am having such a hard time letting it go. I was very impressed with UCLA imaging also, I mean really, how could you not be. I am worried about the location, are you originally from CA? Anyway, I am pretty sure its UCLA for me, but what have you heard about Emory, maybe you can make my decision that much easier?

Did any of you apply to the Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry (MCBB) program at Boston University? If so, have you heard back or do you have any other information?

shebelle,

This is all hear-say but in terms of Emory I heard the neuro program was non existent and there were not many faculty doing interesting work. I also heard they were not very interested in interdisciplinary work. But this is all very subjective.

I have been living in CA for ~ 1.6 yrs, what about the area are you worried about?

-W

prettywitty, interesting, i def did not get that impression. I am from the east coast, so I am no stranger to cities but LA has a reputation for being not so safe, expensive and tons of traffic. I know all of these things are to be expected, I guess there has to be a drawback for getting the ocean and the weather…

Prettywitty, I can tell you that your info about Emory neuroscience is incorrect. My daughter is a student there now.

churchmusicmom, like I said in my previous post, this is just what I heard from a couple of other students that got invited for an interview.

Just wanted to clarify that the info they gave you about the neuro program at Emory being ā€œnon existentā€ is certainly not true. I suppose the number of faculty doing ā€œinteresting workā€ is subjective according to ones ā€œinterestsā€. And, at least according to my daughter and her personal experiences so far, interdisciplinary work is not a problem.

Just wanted to set things straight.

I need some advice.I can’t decide between Cornell Tri-I computational biology and WashU Human and statistical genetics programs. Both are very good programs and similar stipends. Can anyone give me some opinions? Thanks…

The Tri-I program is Phenomenal! Someone in it is temporarily working in our lab at Sloan-Kettering, getting her feet wet with bench work as well. Dr. Michor is incredible and will really help you out, ahot752024

@ahot

I am in that boat too. I was recently accepted to Weill and would have access to the three institutions, but I am leaning toward WashU at this point. Tough call.

Anybody still waiting on acceptance?

I havent heard back from majority of my schools and PLUS Im going to a interview weekend next week.
I really want some definate answers now.

i hvnt heard back from Caltech BMB interview, which was about 2 weeks ago.
the other skls i applied replied within a week after the interviews…
so i guess it is a rejection from caltech???

I haven’t heard back from Northwestern, UT Austin, UIC, VA Tech. The first two are still reviewing int’l applications from overseas applicants (at least that’s what they told me). Un. of Illinois at Chicago is still accepting applications and VA Tech is waiting to hear about funding to decide how many positions they’ll have (this is for the Microbiology Program).
And there is Emory, that is the most annoying… I’m pretty sure I am out, but they do not tell me that, they keep telling me a decision has not been made about my application.
So, I guess there are a few of us waiting…

hello everyone,

just wondering, has anyone heard back from MIT biology post-openhouse? was at the 8th Mar one, and have yet to hear anything from them…

was it more like a recruitment weekend? or do they weed out people?

i was at the second weekend and some people heard back that week while others hadn’t. it was definitely an interview weekend though, not an open house

I have interviewed at 5 places and haven’t heard back from any of them yet, so basically I’m in limbo. Doesn’t help when at least one place is giving me the silent treatment in response to email inquiries. What are the odds of rejection everywhere? I shudder at the thought.
