2010 USNEWS Top National Universities - OFFICIAL

OP, how 'bout the rest of Top 100?

About 4 years ago Penn was ranked #4 with no ties. “non-Wharton” Penn consists of top academic and professional programs on par with Stanford and MIT. I don’t agree with US News in saying that Penn is as good as Stanford and MIT, but it sure has a decent argument for 4th place in the Ivy League and as the 7th best undergraduate university in the country (as well as a top 10ish overall university when looking at grad programs).

What an ugly list. Was there seriously no way to differentiate between those 4 schools tied at #4?

^US News is trying to sell a magazine…so i guess they try to make everyone happy :)

What a crock. Any list that has budget-slashed commuter schools like UC Davis, Irvine and Santa Barbara (and rising from last year) ahead of PSU, FL, Texas, Tulane and Miami is a joke. This is last year I’m going to look at this worthless trash.

So says the Penn student…

this is ridiculous, Michigan at 27, below USC. ***.

^ PA scores is the better criteria. Yes, the U.S. News is becoming more of a joke.

PA Scores: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063120173-post26.html

I never doubted that the rest of UPenn was a good school. I just could never agree, no matter what USNews tells me, that the rest of UPenn is on par with Stanford or MIT. And I definitely do not think it deserves 4th overall (or 7th I guess) save for Wharton. But again, that’s my personal opinion–so I guess I was wrong.

But all those tied at #4 seem ridiculous to me… They might just group the top 8 together. It’s like they’re trying to please so many people…

That’s one ****ED UP Ranking

If these were my rankings, Michigan’s PA score should be tied with Berkeley at 4.7. Northwestern’s PA score should be 4.5. ;)

*Any list that has budget-slashed commuter schools like UC Davis, Irvine and Santa Barbara *

Haha, Davis and Santa Barbara commuter schools? That’s hilarious  Less than 4% of UCSB students come from Santa Barbara County which means means that 96% of students’ home towns are at least an hour away from the school.

Nesh1080, can you please post a complete list of all the tier one liberal arts colleges?

They just ran out of ideas; it’s just a lame attempt to make it look fresh and interesting.

Uh, folks–this is actually the 4th time in 8 years that US News has ranked Penn at #4, either tied with or ahead of Stanford, MIT, and/or CalTech:

It ain’t exactly news anymore. :)

I’d agree that Penn isn’t quite on par with Stanford and MIT at the undergrad level. However, I don’t think I’m overly biased when I say that it has a legit argument for #7. Columbia, Chicago, Duke, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, and Northwestern are all contenders in my opinion for #7. You also have to keep in mind, you need to consider Wharton as part of Penn and not a separate entity. It’s been part of the school for nearly 130 years. No one else tries to think about Stanford’s strength at the undergrad level sans engineering program.

watch usc overtake berkeley next year. usc is the new wustl

Will you Penn students give it a rest already? We know you’re overrated; you know you’re overrated. What’s there to debate?

What I’m saying is that the reputation of Wharton seems to boost the rest too much, imo.

And you’re dead-wrong in thinking of Stanford in terms of just engineering. Stanford has a phenomenal math program, that I know. And I’m sure the rest could vouch for the humanities side. They have at least top 10 programs in almost all disciplines. (Hence my opinion on Penn vs. Stanford)

Stanford is ranked in the top-10, if not top-5, in just about every discipline, not just engineering.
