2011-2012 Med school applicants and their parents

Congrats. You are now allowed to exhale. ;)

Congrats! I will never forget how it feels although it was 1:30am when D. woke me up. I would be mad if she waited until morning.

Congrats! I still remember that DS called me at work (he rarely does so) right after he had received the call. He knew we cared even though we pretended we did not care too much (in order not to give him additional pressure. Nice try on our part but it was not believed by him as he knows us too well after 20+ years together.)

Great news, congrats to your S!

Congrats CapeCodLady8! I bet that turkey is going to taste better than ever this year!

Thanks, everyone! Might have to have some bubbly with that turkey. Heck, it’s a great reason to pop a cork, right?! :)

*My son was so funny when he called. It was early evening and he had just gotten out of a tough Bio exam. Earlier in the afternoon he had shut off his phone so he could focus on last minute reviews in the library and had never turned it back on until he was walking out of the exam. The email had come before the test but he had not seen it and he was really glad. After we talked for a bit I asked him, “So, how was the test anyway?” He replied with a laugh, “I don’t remember!” !!! :)

That is why she got in.

D1 called to say she’s been accepted into a research program. (Her med school requires a “significant” research project during MS2-3 and a capstone paper/thesis.)

She’ll be working in the radiation oncology group doing…high energy physics calculations and radiation data analysis. She’s was also invited to ‘hang out’ with rad oncology group and now has a radiation oncology mentor. (That makes 3 mentors for her so far–a trauma surgeon, an emergency medicine doc and now a radiation oncologist.)

Wow. Sounds great. Sounds like she’s having an incredible experience!

Wow! How do I find a medical school like this?

First post after lurking here for a long time. SDN can be a bit of a piranha tank sometimes, but CC seems like a comfortable jacuzzi :)

And apparently, I don’t have the whole quoting thing down yet.

nadab–she’s at a state U that’s a national leader in medical curriculum development. They put their students in clinical settings the first week of med school and strongly encourage them to to seek mentoring from day one. Basically, if a student has an interest–all they have to do is ask and someone from that department will take them into their group. She’s been able to scrub in on surgeries already. The mentor for the surgical interest group was really excited to have someone interested in trauma surgery since they haven’t had anyone in the past 3 years. (Cardiac, neuro, ortho, general, but not trauma–and there’s a state-wide shortage of trauma surgeons.)

The school also does a lot of personality matching to find students compatible mentors before they even finish the first month of classes. All the attendings are very open to mentoring med students, even first years.

She also has an advantage when it comes to rad oncology since her undergrad degree is in physics and she spent 3 years doing high energy (proton beam) research before she started med school. She and the radiation oncologists all speak geek.

Sounds like a great deal
A lot of us are trying to do clinical earlier as it makes the kids know why

Thanks, WayOutWestMom. It seems like she’s taking advantage of every opportunity.

Happy to report that ds received his first medical school acceptance yesterday! He’s excited and relieved!

D. has research built in into her Med. School program. She may or may not do additional research depending how it fits into her only summer off (next summer). She has almost rulled out her first specialty choice because of requirement of lots of research and several publications as it is very competitive. She likes research but the more she does it, the less time she will have for other opportunities and her preference is to work with people as much as possible. She is trying to schedule several shadows to test out her interests.

Congrats to Ohiomom and son!

WooHoo!! Big congrats, ohiomom! That one feels the best. Vindication feels nice. lol

Congrats to ohiomom and son! As Curm sez: the first one is the sweetest.

Congrats to Ohiomom and son!
