2011-2012 Med school applicants and their parents

Chicago- It’s a badge of honor, chemfreak. All the best Dr.'s have that rejection.
Michigan- Ooohhh!! Nicely done.

Gongrats on U of M!!

grats chemfreak. i am super impressed by everything ive read about mich. wish i got your interview date instead of a sept one.

my interviewing season starts tomorrow. fly out for my 1st one tomorrow. will be taking a plane 4 days straight. once school starts, ill be missing a ton of class which wont be too fun to make up

S was finally verified today, LORs still need to be sent by his school. Is there any way to see what exactly AMCAS sends to the med schools? He calculated his GPA but isn’t sure if AMCAS recalculated it. This whole process is very confusing-and I’m a tax attorney! Give me the good old IRC any day.

I don’t remember but AMCAS will either send you the corrected worksheet or make it available on your account so that you can see exactly what they corrected from the info you filled in as well as how they calculated your GPA.

Yeah you should be able to download a PDF from your AMCAS account that shows exactly what gets sent to the schools, including any corrections made by the AMCAS reviewer.

Thanks norcalguy. Found the numbers on the verified app. So, I know that BCPM means math and science, and I assume that AO is everything else. But under AO there are 2 cumulative totals. Is this something to do with courses courses taken at places other than his main college? Or maybe APs?

Yep-I’m an idiot. S figured out all of the AO stuff. I’d still rather deal with the IRS than AMCAS.

Finally finished submitting all of my secondaries today. Glad that is over! As far as the process has been going so far, I’ve been rejected by Mayo Clinic post LOR request, but received interview invites at Nebraska, Creighton, and Georgetown. Looking forward to all of them.

Congrats, pccool - a good friend of mine is just starting at Creighton this year. He seems pretty excited about the school.

Hi all!

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. While I’m not applying this cycle, I was hoping that someone might be able to answer a question about applying while travelling abroad, specifically during mid-June to early July of one’s application year. If a student submits his primary fairly early (2nd week of June), does it still take about a month to be verified and receive secondary applications? Does the period between submitting the primary and being verified require all hands on deck, so to say, or does one have leeway to travel?

My Dd submitted her app in early to mid June and then was gone the rest of the summer. She did her secondaries abroad, so you need good internet access and time to write them. Some had to be mailed with hard copies of docs or photos, anything like that she emailed to me and I printed and USPS mailed from home.

I would imagine each year more of the app process is automated, but if you are traveling, do not underestimate the time taken to respond to these questions and the need to respond quickly.

Got an interview invite from a school today that doesnt give you an interview date choice. On the assigned date, I already have another interview set up (it happens to be in the same city too). The only option I have is to give up my interview slot with no guarantee of getting another interview date. It feels like I’m withdrawing from the school even though I would really consider this school if accepted. :(

Big red, call them and tell them you are in that city that day for another interview and would like to move theirs by one day to accommodate the travel, it could work.

Or go on SDN and see if someone will trade with you.

BRD, definitely worth a phone call to the admissions office before you make up your mind. A little flattery wouldn’t hurt either–that you love their school, can’t wait to learn more about their program, you really want to interview there, etc. I don’t know if you were considering it, but I wouldn’t mess with the already-scheduled interview (but maybe that’s just me, and maybe it’s acceptable to do so).

When I had this problem last year, I called the school that had assigned me the date and mentioned a scheduling conflict (which happened to be finals)–could I reschedule? They said I could without hesitating…but that the next available date was in 2 months! I ended up keeping the early date and rescheduling my final instead.

the school only interviews on one day a week. wish they did interview on different days so that i could save on travel money.

Wasnt considering moving the already scheduled interview (it is higher up on my list and considered one of the best in the state). I asked to be put on the rescheduled list. While it’s not a guarantee that I will be invited for an interview there again, yesterday was the first day they started offering interviews, so hopefully I do get invited back. It feels weird to be turning down (sort of) an interview this early in the cycle.

Does the other school interview on either the day before or the day after? Worth a call, even though you scheduled with them first. Schools are pretty understanding about stuff like this.

My D’s friend just got her MCAT re-test back and went up a point to a 29 (10,10,9). No invites yet, and in Texas, lots of invites have been extended already.

She’ll get into a Texas med school with that score plus the rest of her app, but had she been early…she’d have had a great chance at getting in this year. Her timing just wasn’t that great.

Next year’s folks , learn your lesson. Y’all need to concentrate on getting yourself the best timing possible. Especially you Texas kids.

Curm- does that mean the TX schools did not consider her on the basis of her 28 and invite her to interview? Do they wait for the second score when you say you are retaking?

I think the latter. I have to think she’d have received interviews on the basis of the 28. It wasn’t a horribly unbalanced 28.
