2011 Going off their waitlist

@riogemini: so they DID go to waitlist, but they have no further plans at the immediate time (however, does that mean no spots will come up later for those who are reading??)

Sorry to cause confusion. Our counselor told us that a condition of getting off a waitlist is to agree to decline all other waitlists. If this is not the case, I apologize. Seems as if there is no real reason to not say yes to any offers, except you lose deposits, potentially. I don’t know how this is any different from putting down multiple deposits, though (?)

I’m waiting / hoping for a call from a college three time zones away where I’m wait-listed. I’m not exactly sitting by the phone – but should I be? If a college calls to offer a spot off the wait list, will they leave a message? Or do they just pass you by and call someone else on the wait list?
The college only has my home phone number, and because of the time difference I’m mostly never home during their “business hours”. Will this hurt my chances of getting “the call”? I have a cell phone but I don’t want to give the college that number, because I can’t take calls during school.
Does anybody have any experience with how the calling process works? If I happen to miss “the call” have I maybe lost my chance forever?? Thanks!

LA, Your nerves are understandable, but rest assured the universities make all reasonable efforts to contact you. From what I have read on admission blogs they fully understand students are largely unreachable during school hours. I’ve never heard of a waitlist situation where the student didn’t answer the phone so they simply went to the next student. Again, I’m not dismissing your anxiety, but I don’t think that’s the way it works. Good luck!

blueiguana, thanks for the info. that helps my anxiety slightly! :-)

If you swore to your GC that College X was your first choice and you will go there regardless of any other waitlist spot opening up and the GC represents same to that college, the GC looks really bad if X accepts you off the waitlist, you deposit at X, then a week later Y takes you off the waitlist and you decide to go to Y instead. If you or GC haven’t made any promises, it doesn’t matter if you decide to go to the second school that takes you off the waitlist other than loss of deposit.

@bike17: your daughter can wait for her top choice college, as long as she doesn’t keep two deposits/colleges at one time. Please read:

“…some students decide to delay that decision by doing something called “double depositing”. If you are thinking of doing this, read this first! Double depositing is VERY RISKY and could cost you admission to all of your top choice schools.”

[Double-Depositing: A Wise College Choice? | myUsearch blog](Double-Depositing: A Wise College Choice? | myUsearch blog)

I only just discovered this forum and I find it very helpful. My daughter was fortunate enough to be accepted to four excellent liberal arts programs but was waitlisted for her top three. After attending admitted students’ previews at two of the four she was able to eliminate three. Although she hadn’t liked it a year ago, she discovered that she very much enjoyed her time at the remaining college and fell in with a group of potential friends among the other admitted students. As time passes she is becoming more bonded to this school and less committed to her original top three. It is a wonderful college but rather isolated in a region of near-Arctic winters. I think the admissions committee there knows her well and they have made the right decision, and as we haven’t heard anything from the colleges where she has been waitlisted, it is probably time to move on. I hope we’re not being too hasty.

That thread doesn’t say anything about anyone getting off the wait list. It’s all speculative at this point.

@ Boss: The poster on that thread says: “I know of one person that got the call today, accepted!” and then goes on to give details that the accepted student is from Connecticut and was accepted at 1:30. Everything on this site is speculative, in that it is not coming from admissions officers who know the real numbers. However, we can only work on the
honor system and assume people are telling the truth when they report.

There is also a second poster from Alabama who was accepted.

Yale has definitely gone to it’s waitlist. Friend’s D got the call today in CA.

On the Harvard forum, someone posted that Harvard is going to its WL in a couple days.

Mea culpa, my bad as it were…for some reason I could only view one page of the thread…good for those who get into Yale and everywhere off the wl.

@Dandemom: Could you give us more information about Williams(your post 227)?
Much appreciated.

Has anyone heard for sure about U of Texas? Only one I’ve seen seemed unsure if the student’s online status had been updated or whether the person only heard unofficially.

Was told by high school guidance office that University of Miami was done . . .No more waitlist offers expected. Anyone else heard this?

Sorry about giving no back up info on Williams. D’s friend got off the WL on Friday. She is most likely not going to accept the offer though. She has to have a decision in by Wednesday.

Projectmom1: Wake filled their incoming class with a few from their wl but if any current students decide to go somewhere else I assume they will again go to the wl, but as of now they are no longer pulling from the wl.

Adding Amherst from a post on their forum.
