2011 January SAT: Critical Reading

I agree with number 6

“Why did the grandma learn to write love?
I put to contribute more directly to letter”

No, it wasn’t to contribute more directly to the letter -__-, double repost here, guys.

Here is my evidence supporting MY answer and what we ultimately agreed on, back on page 40-ish.

"“I took over her life in prose. Somewhere along the line, though, she decided to take full possession of her sign-off. She asked me to show her how to write “Love” so she could add it to “Teresa” in her own hand. She practiced the new word many times on scratch paper before she allowed herself to commit it to the bottom of a letter.”

This proves my early point on the question referring to this particular piece of the passage (the one about why she wants to learn how to write love).

o0Max0o What did you put then? It’s not clear from your post.

what were the short passages. I remember alaska, environment, plants(chlorophyll) but what were the other ones?

What was the question for 13. Indelible (Nutcracker)?whats it abt?

Sorry, I put the option that was something to the effect of wanting to properly finsih the letter. One second, I’ll go find the proper wording.

The indelible question had to do with the dazzling Nutcracker performance being _____ to the children or something to that effect.

Ahh I can’t find the proper wording of the ending of the grandma’s letter question >.<

Here is a list someone put together a bit of the way back, I think it’s acurate.

Unpredictable

Recognized … Considerable

Diminutive

Proximity

Hardy

Reconcile … Dogmatic (Does everyone agree? Or was it polemical)

Surmise … Deed (the historian)

Arrested … preserved (the artist)

Honors

Opinion … Argue

Deleterious (new vaccine)

Eschew … Adhere (Native American potters)

Indelible (Nutcracker)

Increasing awareness

Welfare … reputation

Prodigy … Exceptional

Mirrors … Evoke

Meteoric

Anomalous (particles differed from the norm)

“she decided to take full possession of her sign-off.” Doesn’t this point more towards her wanting to contribute more, rather than finishing the letter properly? There wasn’t any indication of her thinking that the daughter was doing it wrong or that she herself could do it better.

In my opinion, this supports that the grandmother took decided to learn how to end the letter in order to contribute more directly.

I think we have a consensus on reconcile/dogmatic.

what was the other word to pair with polemical?

I think almost everyone was in agreement about her deciding to write love as being indicative that she wanted to make a more direct contribution to her letter.

I think so too.

Okay good because when he said that everyone was in agreement with his answer choice I was a bit confused because more recent posts make it seem like more people (myself included) believe it’s the contributing more answer choice.

what were other choices for the nutcracker (indelible) question?besides ineffable…

The answer was “acknowledge/polemical” not “reconcile/dogmatic.” The question said something along the lines of “He was usually a nice person so he found it hard to _______ his ______ attitude.” I know it’s vague, but I specifically remember an opposition to his doctrine which would make “polemical” (contrary to one’s opinion) the correct answer. Nothing in the sentence indicated his dogmatism or arrogance.

For the environment one, was the answer “concerns she has” or “an old lifestyle versus a new one”?
That was closer to the wording than “facing issues now” is… one was the comparison between lifestyles and one was concerns. Which was correct?

Also, was the correct answer to the last grandma question “formative experience as a writer?” was that the consensus?

Oh, and what was the “needing evidence” question or whatever it was, about the environmental ecotourism? what were the other answer choices? Because I don’t remember putting down the evidence thing…

I put concerns and formative experience as a writer. Fairly sure those are the answers.
Did you put “acknowledge/polemical” or “reconcile/dogmatic” for the sentence completion?

OK looks like i’m good for concerns then… but then like an idiot i put the immigrant answer for the last q, completely missing the beginning sentence about “my first commissioned work, blah blah blah”

I put reconcile/dogmatic…but only because i didn’t know what polemical was lol. Hoping for reconcile!

Do you remember the evidence question for the evironment short passage? That one was confusing for me…

Do you mean the one that with the answer “a good indication of education,” if not I am sorry because that is the only one I remember.
