thanks!

The BCMB allied program at Weill. I chose Integrated cell and Molec bio at Columbia instead because I had a better rapport with my faculty interviews. My interviews at cornell were just awkward for whatever reason.

thanks!

Got a phone interview invitation for Stony Brook University MCB last Friday by e-mail. I applied through the Watson School of the Biological Sciences (Cold Spring Harbor). I declined the interview though, so good luck if you’re still waiting on them.

Applied: UMichigan PiBS, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, Weill Cornell
Interviewed: UMichigan, Columbia, Weill Cornell
Accepted: UMichigan, Weill Cornell
Attendng: Weill Cornell

I’m not surprised I didn’t hear back from Columbia…there were 3 possible faculty I wanted to work with, and one is starting to retire, one isn’t taking students, and the other just gave the project I wanted to work on to his post-doc who left. There was definitely a mutual feeling of “this is a bad fit” when I was there, and I didn’t even send follow-up emails because I knew I wouldn’t go there.

Is anyone else attending Weill next year?

This program is my first choice and seems like I have been waiting forever to hear from them. Interviewed about a month ago. Received email three weeks ago saying we would hear in about 3 weeks. Spoke to the admin office yesterday and was told they would be reviewing again(?) this week and expect notification week of March 21st. I did see a few acceptances a few days after the first interview weekend (Feb 2) but nothing posted here or grad cafe since.

Here is my question - has anyone been accepted since these first few in early Feb? Has anyone heard anything else on dates and where they are in the process? I am wondering if UCSF BMS has been sending out acceptances over the past weeks and since I have not gotten a call or email am either rejected or maybe waitlisted or??? Any info or shared misery appreciated. Thanks!

come on nyu!!!

I find it really hard to decide which is a “better” PhD program and I’m having such a hard time deciding. But I did really like USC so I was wondering if anyone knew how good of a program USC PIBBS was?

@yeastwhisperer

If you didn’t hear back from UCSF within the week following, you were put onto a waitlist or so the adcomm told me 3 weeks ago when I too received the same email.

Oh my… thank you, Flutopian, for your honest answer. I have worried that this was the case. I will try to keep hoping for some good luck. If anyone knows anything else or hears more about UCSF BMS please post. The truth will set us free (to decide among other offers at least)

Best of luck to all. As a reader (if not poster until now) this forum had been a great source of info and support.

I applied to:
Weill Cornell (Pharmacology)
Hopkins (Phramacology)
Georgetown (Tumor Biology)
Uni of MD (Molecular Medicine)

I’ve only had interviews at Hopkins and Uni of MD so far, and i’m on the waiting list at Hopkins.

Ne body got ne info on the rest of the schools???

I interviewed with Maryland’s Molecular Medicine program, and haven’t heard anything back yet. Have you?

@desperate4aphd
I interviewed at Georgetown Tumor biology at the end of January and they had another interview weekend in mid-Feb. I was told a couple of weeks ago that final decisions would be made soon. I am assuming I am on some sort of wait list at this point.

@LocknKey
no i haven’t heard ne thing yet! but supposedly they’re done with interviews so we should hear back soon

@mbr484
ok thanx! i guess that means an unspoken rejection for me

Final wrap up:

Applied: Harvard biophysics, MIT Physics, Penn BMB, Caltech BMB, UCSF TETRAD, Berkeley biophysics, Stanford biophysics, Duke medical physics, Scripps biophysics, Harvard-MIT medical engineering medical physics, Princeton molecular biology

Interviews: all except MIT physics and Harvard biophysics, which don’t interview. Decided not to interview at Scripps, Princeton, and Duke

Admitted: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, UCSF, Caltech, Penn, Harvard-MIT

Attending: either Harvard or Stanford, undecided…

Advice for future wanderers on these boards:

School selection: don’t apply to eleven schools, it is excessive, expensive, and time-consuming. Also, really try to look hard at each school and try to pick the best program for you; I should have applied to applied physics at Caltech, iPQB at UCSF, and physics at Princeton.

About getting into a really good program: obviously, grades, GRE’s, essays, etc. are all important. But the number one most important piece of your application is the recommendation letter from your PI. Really focus on developing a good relationship with your PI so that when the time comes he will go to bat for you. Multiple interviewers commented on how highly my PI thought of me and how great his recommendation letter was. I will say that I do feel some research areas in the biosciences are particularly competitive, especially neuroscience, so think carefully about what programs you apply to; some of these programs are very narrowly focused and force you to take certain courses, while others give you huge flexibility to design your own curriculum.

Interviews: don’t stress out about them and just be yourself. Ask a ton of questions about the research, about the weather, about the housing, about anything that matters to you.

About picking which school to attend: these interviews are a great way to get to know the professors and grad students in a program. I very quickly (within 6 hours of being there) discovered that Caltech and Penn were not good fits for me. I loved a bunch of the faculty at Stanford, Berkeley, and Harvard, and could see myself being very happy at any of the three schools.

Final, miscellaneous advice: compared with many of my friends who are going through the med school application process, grad school apps aren’t nearly as bad. There are a ton of labs all around the country that are doing really good research, and it’s not worth it to get all strung out about getting into your “dream school.” Remember, we’re going to be spending 5 years or more in grad school. You will do quite well if you can find a program/lab where the people are happy and the research is interesting to you. That’s all that really matters.

Committed to GSK today and declined all my other offers. Hopefully that helps out some of you still waiting. Good luck!

Hey, guys!

I was just accepted to Tufts Sackler ISP. Really not sure if I want to go there… choosing a school is very tough, but I liked the interview there. What are people’s opinions on this school/program?
