2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@mantidguy

Many schools don’t rate GRE super highly, and will take research experience/letters/etc. much more into account.

You have a good undergrad GPA and demonstrated good work in your masters in terms of GPA(and research?).

I’d work on getting papers and not focus super hard on GRE score. With that said, you have a lot of time to study/take it again if you’re applying for 2012 start.

Just received acceptance by phone to Hopkins Human Genetics :slight_smile:

@mantidguy, Yeah I wouldn’t concern yourself too much with GRE. My quant GRE was a 650 (verbal and writing was pretty high, but I don’t think biosci programs care much about that) and I haven’t had any problems getting into high-ranked programs. I don’t have any publications either. A good amount of independent research experience but no pubs. So yeah, I’d study some more and retake it if I were you, but don’t let it make you crazy or interfere with other more important work (i.e. research). Good luck!

Guys, normally how much time does UAB take to give admits to international students for Ph.D??? Is it ok if i havent heard from them yet??? Am I on the right track???

@mantidguy

It is hard to raise the verbal score at least in my case however the math score is easy to raise with practice. With a better score and good recommendation i think you will have an excellent chance. However you are still competitive to some school right now with that school if you can provide strong recommendation letters or if you know someone.

Good luck

@biomeeti

I can’t answer you, but I’m also an international student and they didn’t answer me yet. I applied to the immunology program, though…

@biomeeti…Int. student here…Didnt apply to UAB. However, waiting on 6 different programs. So I guess its quite normal for the schools to keep us waiting till the very end.

saw someone accepted at northwestern IBiS on gradcafe, anyone else hear back?

what is the longest anyone has heard back from a school after they’ve interviewed? i went to a school’s visit about a month ago, and heard from the dept. head that she wants to get back to people in 2 weeks…

i’m guessing i’m on some sort of waitlist, but way too scared to call and check.

wrap up…

@bash

It’s been about a month now since one of my interviews and I made the dreaded inquiry yesterday about the status of the admissions decisions. I heard back today and they said they’ll make decisions by the end of next week, so don’t lose the faith - some programs just take longer.

Made the decision to go to Columbia. It was hard to choose… but am DONE! Congrats everyone!

I think I have made my decision!

Interviews (I declined): Yale BBS, Princeton, Columbia, UCSB, Baylor College of Medicine, UPenn

Interviews (I attended): Harvard MCB, MIT, CalTech, UCSD, UCSF Tetrad, UC Berkeley, Stanford

Accepted: Harvard BBS, Harvard MCB, UCSD, UCSF, Berkeley, Stanford

Currently ignoring me: MIT, CalTech (assuming rejections) (no pre-interview rejects)

Attending: Likely Stanford!

Anyone heard from Tri-I Computational Biology?

I’ve recently interviewed at both places and haven’t heard back…any info would be appreciated

has anyone heard back from NYU neural science?

Final verdict:

Applied: Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Albert Einstein, Cold Spring Harbor, Sloan Kettering, Cornell Weill, Rockefeller, Stanford, UCSF

Accepted: Columbia, Albert Einstein, cornell Weill

Attending: Columbia!!

great relief to have it all over with :-)

@solddl
I interviewed for ACCESS Feb 12-14 and heard back on Feb 24th. The people who interviewed on Feb 26-28th also recently heard back. Perhaps you are waitlisted and will hear back after they do their last interview session?

DanyTarg… what program at Weill? and congrats!
