2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Anybody waitlisted for the Vanderbilt IGP program? Have u heard back from them?

I guess I’ll do my wrap-up.
Undergrad GPA: 2.9
Masters GPA: 3.8
GRE: Q: 770 V: 700 AW: 6.0
3 years of research. One 2nd author paper and 2 papers in the middle author.

Applied: NYU, Emory, Duke, UMich, UPenn, UChicago
Interviews: All but did not go to UMich
Rejected after interview: UChicago (silence after interview, I’m assuming waitlisted or rejected)
Accepted: Everywhere else

80% sure I’m going to Duke. I still want to know about UChicago even if it’s a rejection. I’ve already rejected the other offers except for NYU which I’m still hanging on to. I’m not sure why except that I’m just not ready to reject it yet. My friends all think I’m crazy if I were to give up Duke for NYU.

@ Jeanx11: hi–i was wondering–which program at NYU did you get accepted at? congrats on all your acceptances!!

@neuromodel

Thanks! Sackler, the open program but I put down Immuno as my area of interest.

@Jeanx11–thanks very much for the quick reply! congrats again and best of luck with making a choice!

@Jeanx11: I’m in a similar situation. I loved NYU, but I also loved Berkeley when I was there. I’ve talked to my PI and the postdocs in my lab a lot about where I should go. No one has told me that I would be crazy to turn down Berkeley for NYU, but that’s kind of how I feel.

Talking to them is making me see that NYU is also a good school…and they also say that it doesn’t matter where you go to grad school, but its the environment and who you work with that matters the most. Every school has good and bad people. And where you go to grad school doesn’t matter because its where you do the postdoc that’s really important.

I say if you love duke, go to duke, but don’t disregard NYU because you don’t think its as reputable.

belleoftheball: My only downside to NYU is, honestly, NYC. It’s just really expensive compared to the other cities I have as my options. While I really liked NYU and the people there, I liked another school just as well, and I’d have a lot more extra money. I don’t know much about Berkeley though.

I had almost narrowed down my mind to Vanderbilt this past weekend, and then another school offerred me an extra few thousand a year as part of a fellows program. Certainly shakes things up a little, since one of the reasons I had decided against that school was for its stipend…I really did love Vanderbilt, though, but it’d be a HUGE change from where I’m living now.

is anyone here going to penn state hershey in the fall?

Finally got acceptance offer from UCSF BMS program! I interviewed there almost 2 months ago! They are still sending out offers! So don’t give up hope!

congratulations, zidane!

@labtech

I’m still waiting to hear back from them (PSU-Hershey)…when did you interview/hear back?

UCSF BMS is indeed still sending out offer. Finally received my offer from them yesterday. Still undecided between Northwestern IGP and UCSF BMS, but I released my offers from UVa MCDB and Univ. of Maryland Molecular Medicine. Hopefully that will help some of you that are still waiting.

Hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone knew whether or not there was a way to back out after accepting an offer from a school? I know it’s definitely frowned upon, but is it possible?

After giving up hope on being interviewed by the schools I was waitlisted for, I just got an email today and I had already accepted an offer from another school. The one that I had been waitlisted for would be a better fit for me I think, but I don’t know if I lost my chance by accepting the other one sooner than I had to…

You can change your mind, it’s not ideal, but you can change your mind freely before April 15. Go to the school you feel is the best fit for you.

@ BMEconvert

when did you interview at UVa for the MCDB program. I haven’t heard from them hence I was just wondering. I interviewed on 4th Feb,2011.

@meddreams
I interviewed at a different program at UVA around the same time. I just happened upon a rejection letter on the application website, so you should check there. I didn’t get any other notification, email, etc letting me know the letter was available.

I applied to 7 schools and I haven’t been accepted or rejected to any schools yet. I interviewed at three schools in mid-february. Should i be worried or is this not uncommon???

@meddreams, I interviewed there on the weekend of Feb 24th and heard back a week later

@ BMEconvert and Mbr484

Thank you. I will check with them. I guess I am some sort of short list… and I have no idea if that is positive or negative:)

Thanks again

@waitingame

I interviewed on february 17th and heard back on the 28th
