2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

What to wear should be the least of anyone’s worries. Last year when I was still an undergrad I saw some prospectives trekking through and it ran the gamut. One guy wore khaki shorts, flip flops and a polo with the popped collar. No one thought anything of it. I thought it was strange but people said the research culture is very casual. The only thing that stood out was this girl had on a black suit/skirt. The grad students in the lab called it the “med school outfit.” A lot of people wore jeans but my school is pretty casual, it might be different at other schools. If they specify the dress code then go with that, otherwise I’d go with casual.

That’s the program. The 3-5 I’ll be in Yale, whereas the 24-26 I’ll be at Harvard. They still haven’t gotten back to me yet to see if I can schedule an individual interview.

tetrad just sent out decision emails… nothing unexpected, though.

Is anyone a current UPenn student and knows anything about BGS admissions? I have seen so many invites for CAMB, but none for the other divisions of BGS. Does this mean none have been issued? Is it normal for the other departments to be so far behind CAMB? This is by far my first choice school/department (Genetics and Computational Biology) and I am getting anxious.

How did you hear of the rejection?

I just checked the UCSF website and I’ve been denied from the UCSF BMS program. :(

I wasn’t planning on going there so it’s ok, but it seems a little rude to not even send an email!

My first rejection, oh woe is me…

wow, today sucks. Denied from UCSF BMS too!

@benkraj
I called the program coordinator, who said to email the OxCam Admissions Director (find it under contacts on the website). I emailed him and he gave me the decision. I think he just told me though, not the slew of official rejections yet. he was very kind though and gave personal feedback. they said they have 12 spots/year.

SAD FACE. Oh well, I still have NIH-JHU. This day really sucks. Now I’m panicking that I’ll get denied post-interviews. I feel sad :frowning: I really wanted both of those.

Also I think the assumption of de-facto rejection from Stanford is probably correct. Ahh, rejection, i say this to you :P!

@microcycle Yep, the ID Phd program in the SPH.

It’s a smaller program, but did anyone here apply to Colorado State(for micro)? If so, have you heard anything?

I’ve contacted Johns Hopkins to see if I can reschedule my Thursday interview for next week. I’m sort of accepting that there’s no way I can fly out this week unless I left, say, tonight. I don’t have an interview for next week, so it’s not a huge problem for me. But it’s very annoying, and I was sort of hoping to get my first interview over!

has anyone heard ANYTHING from neural science NYU…? replies are muuch appreciated, guys!

has anyone heard back from any of tehse two programs…?

There’s been a lot of talk on here about what to wear if you’re a girl. What if you’re a guy? I’m thinking khaki pants, decent shoes and a nice button-down shirt would be good, and maybe a nice sweater if it’s cold. How does this sound?

MIT is sending out rejections.

I hope I used up all my bad luck on that, as I’m waiting to hear back from GSK post-interview.

Yep, just got rejected from MIT.

@ sirtuin-
That sounds completely acceptable to wear.

@sirtuin:

I have been on several interviews so far and the interview day attire for guys has ranged anywhere from a few people in suits down to a couple of people in corduroy pants, a polo and sneakers. I have rarely seen jeans (though I think one or two people may have been wearing them). I’d say the average (and what I went with) is what you mentioned: khakis, a button-down shirt, dress shoes, and (optionally) a sweater or tie.

Honestly, though, nobody has ever commented to anyone else and I have never felt out of place based on what I was wearing. I’d say just go what you’re comfortable with and you will be fine.

I know phone calls come in waves, but is it wishful thinking that emails do the same? I saw on gradcafe that someone got an interview via email from a program I applied to, and now I’m worried because I’ve received nothing. My labmates told me to not worry about it, but its really bothering me…
