2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

@microcycle

I know, right?! It’s my first choice program, too, so I’m really anxious! It’s almost February!

Hi Has anyone gotten invites / heard back from USC Neuroscience? Still waiting for them to get back…

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, just got rej from yale MB&B. First rej…

anyone heard from UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas - DBS program yet?

@secondypdm aw man sorry…were you sent an email from yale?

@secondypdm: got one too:X what’s more interesting is that the person who signed the letter (Tom Pollard) actually graduated from my college, and my research mentor personally knows him…

Is anyone else going to be at Tufts ISP on the 18th of Feb? If so, have you booked your airplane ticket yet? What is the cheapest method of doing so? It’s kind of a bummer that they don’t book the airplane ticket for you, and the amount they’ll reimburse you for the plane ticket doesn’t seem to cover the price needed to buy the ticket myself.

Thanks!

I just found out that I got rejected from UCSD Neuroscience. It’s not a surprise, but it is still sad. :(

Interview:
UCLA MCIP
UC Irvine Neuroscience

Rejected from:
UCSF BMS
UCSD Neuroscience

Still waiting on:
UCSD BMS

@stemcellz
cya at both of those!

@ShidoDesu
I just hello, I applied to OxCam and was just inquiring as to the status of my application. Thank you very much. He’s nice, even in his rejection. And he got back to me pretty quickly. Just rip off the band aid!

@pharmnerd
what interview date did vandy they give you? i know their deadline was ~ 10 days ago so I’m still hoping!

@biology123 vandy has basically every weekend til mid-march… im going march 10-12 but they gave me lots of options… they told me that they know that they are very late compared to other schools so they are really working with students’ schedules

@sunkist7
Harvard Biophysics seems like a great place, but I think I’ll still go to all the interviews I had planned. I want to see what all the other places/professors are like - not having been to see most of them in person yet - before I start eliminating options.

So I just checked the UCSD website again and it no longer says DENIED. It now says no decision has been made. They revoked my rejection???

What does this mean!!! It was probably just a bug or a mistake, but it makes me nervous…

@UCNeuro2011

No clue what it means, but I did flash back to the year they sent acceptances to all the ugrad applicant! :o

Sorry guys, been stuck in lab all day, I liked StL, but still have a few other interviews and would like to stay closer to home. I actually applied to the Molecular Cell Biology program for them b/c I heard the Genetics program wasn’t accepting as many ppl this year (which showed in only 7 Genetics applicants in for interviews).

@bbqltw well I don’t think Tom Pollard actually participates a lot in the admission process. It is the committee for every track that decides.

I have a question for you all who have received rejections. How are they being sent? I haven’t received any rejections but am still waiting to hear from Georgetown, UT Austin, and John’s Hopkins. I’ve gotten interviews at all of my other schools so I guess that’s hopeful, but I would have expected to hear something.

What does it mean if you haven’t been contacted yet at these programs? Lots of people have gotten interviews at JHU, but only 1 post has been made for UT Austin and Georgetown on gradcafe.

@ neurotexasgal

For UCSF, they sent me a letter saying a decision had been made with a link to their website. When I went to the website, it said I was denied and I downloaded a generic rejection letter.

For UCSD…see above.

Might be useful to check the websites if you haven’t already. Hope this helps!

any updates? this board has been superrr slow the past couple of days!

not that i have anything to share, nothing has been thrown my way either

has anyone heard anything from Stanford Cell and Molecular Physiology? I called Biosciences Admissions today and they told me that a letter has been sent with my decision letter has been sent and that they couldnt give me any more information… starting to freak out over here as I am currently on my way to my first interview so I wont see the letter til late…
any idea if getting a later in these days is a good or a bad sign?

OK, I’ll stop lurking. I finally heard back from Mt. Sinai today!

Applied to Immunology Ph.D. programs
Degree: Biochemistry B.S., Biology minor
GPA: 3.73 from a good research school
GRE: 730Q, 480V, 4.0AW
2.5 years of research as an undergrad
Summer internship at UCSF
1.5 (will be 2) years of research as a technician, 2 manuscripts in preparation (1 1st author and 1 2nd author)
LOR from my 3 PIs, I assume they are all good

Interviews: Boston University (Pathology-Immunology), Mt. Sinai
Rejections: UWashington, UCSF (BMS)
Waiting: Stanford. I’m pretty sure it will be a rejection …

Looks like there’s a chance that I’ll be moving to the other side of the country
