2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

IzzieE, flying from Boston to Chicago? Or Chicago to Boston?

Hey niftyname, I got the call from Harvard biophys tonight too. How high is it on your list/how many interviews are you going to cancel because of the acceptance? I think I’m turning down Princeton and Scripps, probably should turn down a few others.

I called my airline the second the travel advisory was posted and got switched to an 8 am flight tomorrow. I look forward to trying to pick out all the other stressed out hopefully soon-to-be grad students scurrying about the airport :slight_smile: Good luck everyone!

@phirah

From Boston to Chicago. I’m thinking just rebook. Or else I might go crazy waiting until Thurs hoping my flight won’t get cancelled. Even if the school won’t pay for that extra unplanned day I’ll chalk it up to “applying to grad school expenses.”

@IzzieE

If you’re going to fly out tomorrow, definitely try to get a flight that leaves before noon or so. The snow’s going to start around then, I think. Not sure what Thursday will be like, though.

Party of at least three grad candidates @ Logan tomorrow! :)

IzzieE, give the program a call. I would bet they actually have rooms reserved in their hotel block for Wednesday night – people arriving from far away often have to come the night before, so you could very well be all set.

I’m very risk-averse, but I would advise trying to get out well in advance of the storm. The airlines have been very conservative about canceling flights rather than delaying. (Well, to be fair, I’m risk-averse, and I spent 8+ hours apiece in three different airports getting back from Columbus to Boston after Christmas.)

Anyone gonna be at the UCI CMB interview this weekend? It’s my first one and I’m nervous. Glad to have a school I am less invested in first though for a practice run of sorts :)

@Geek for Life

Which WUSTL program??? What did you think of the school/area?

I have to take the train up to NYC from DC tomorrow for the Columbia interview. I don’t know at what point I start freaking out about delays/cancellations. I know with the flights, they tend to cancel them really easy, but I have no idea how much snow it takes to throw off the Amtrak, or how easy it is to reschedule.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong.

oh and I received my official rejection from GSK this morning. whatevs, I knew it was coming…got plenty of other options

Did anyone on this thread apply to USF Ca Biology PhD?

Hi Mackmasta21 program did you apply to USF for?

To everyone who heard good news from GSK congratulations! It was nice to meet some of you over last week and I had alot of fun! Anyway, if you have questions about the program PM me. We’ll be getting in touch soon!

@canbio

I applied to USF Cancer biology. They sent an email awhile ago saying that they weren’t going to review applications until after the Feb 1st deadline.

I know you directed this at someone else, but I interviewed at WashU STL last weekend in Molecular Genetics and Genomics (MGG). They just called me yesterday and let me know I was accepted! I really loved the program. It was fantastic! The whole DBBS was really interdisciplinary. No matter smaller program you’re in you can work with any of the 420 DBBS faculty. Also they just increased the stipend to $28,000 which goes a long way in St. Louis considering the average 1 bedroom apt is ~$700. They also give you a $500 moving allowance. Also even though they’re a top notched program they have a very down to earth, midwestern feel. I loved watching the students and PIs interact. If you have any questions you can PM me.

KemKem that is helpful. Thank you.

Hey guys, anyone hear from ucsd bms lately (rejection or otherwise)? Are they done with invites? Any info would be great. Thanks!

@tnnsplyr88 nope :-/ i’m waiting on them too! i have a feeling its going to be a rejection though, the last two days have been a constant stream (MIT, Gerstner)

Still no word from Harvard BPH, anyone?

@phirah: I still haven’t heard from Harvard BPH either…it’s killing me!

Anyone out there with inside info on this program? I’m about to march up to Longwood and start knocking on doors and asking questions.
