^^^^great example of why high school counselors are not to be trusted. Anything more than .3 or .4 points either way raises questions about their knowledge. Of course I personally have no question about their level of knowledge. After all, most majored in education. Sorry to sound like a complete snob about this, but IMHO there is no degree in college easier to obtain than one in education at the UG level.

@Alexandre, what was the statistic your had on colleges ranked out of a score of 100? I remember Dartmouth and Northwestern being 89, Duke 90, Johns Hopkins 93, etc. You had this in another thread.

^ rjk, most (high school) guidance counselors need a state license and a master’s degree from an accredited counseling education/psychology program. How do you know most guidance counselors majored in education at the undergraduate level? The counselors could have majored in any social science or humanities.

If we list the numbers from highest to lowest, it clearly represents a Northeast bias:

4.9. Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale
4.8. Brown, Cornell, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins
4.7. Dartmouth, Duke

I don’t think the degree is the issue; the counselor rankings reflect more regional differences and awareness. You should ask U.S. News what proportion of the counselors came from the Northeast. That would explain the discrepancies.

^^^^^

Duke wouldn’t suffer from its poor PA score if it indeed is in the northeast…really same PA as Brown?

Ivy League PA bias is most clearly more significant than NE bias.

“^ rjk, most (high school) guidance counselors need a state license and a master’s degree from an accredited counseling education/psychology program. How do you know most guidance counselors majored in education at the undergraduate level? The counselors could have majored in any social science or humanities.”

I did not realize this of course and I apologize for my hasty remarks. However, how do you explain why so many of them ranked IUPUI at the same level as the University of Wisconsin in their rankings? I mean, it takes a lot of ignorance from so many to make a mistake like that, don’t you agree?

^ What is IUPUI? Maybe counselors thought it was Indiana University, Bloomington + Purdue University… ;)

Alexandre,

You got a typo for Northwestern. The list should look like this:

4.9/5.0
Harvard University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Princeton University
Stanford University

4.8/5.0
Yale University

4.7/5.0

4.6/5.0

4.4/5.0

4.3/5.0

4.2/5.0

4.1/5.0

Vanderbilt University
Washington University-St Louis

4.0/5.0
Emory University
University of Southern California
University of Texas-Austin

IUPUI is Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis. It is it’s own campus. That most counselors would make this simple mistake, and it is simple considering that this is what they do for a living, should be really embarrassing for the obviously large numbers who did it.

noobcake, my definition of Northeast bias includes the BosWash region. All the metropolitan areas from Boston to Washington DC. In the future, the definition may extend to Raleigh-Durham if the region continues to grow exponentially. A significant percentage of Duke students come from the Mid-Atlantic and MD-VA-NC area. Hence, the Northeast bias.

rjk, I don’t know how IUPUI outranked Indiana-Bloomington. Again, there’s a Northeast bias here. With the exception of Purdue (well known for engineering), most are not familiar with the state of Indiana and voted the next thing they could recognize: Indianapolis.

Well, if they spelled out the school like that on the survey counselors were probably confused…Indiana University and Purdue University have great academic programs. The name affiliations probably elevated IUPUIs rating.

So the Mildcat becomes a Wildcat…4.3 to 4.4… Wow! What a Wildcat! Raaaywwwrrr

:D

“Well, if they spelled out the school like that on the survey counselors were probably confused…Indiana University and Purdue University have great academic programs. The name affiliations probably elevated IUPUIs rating.”

…and that proves they know what they are doing? ;-)

I about fell outta my chair…xiggi posting PA scores?!!

Don’t get too excited UCB. He posted them in order of the overall USNWR rankings. His favorites are still on the top.

RJK, I understand that you perceive your participation to this site to be successful by being a major source of irritation to everyone.

Isn’t it time for you to grow up and try to present a couple of cogent arguments instead of all the puerile interventions that define you? Perhaps you could actually start by looking up data, analyzing it, and sharing it with the board. After all, it might help you gain a modicum of understanding and knowledge of the issues that are debated here.

Give it a shot.
