General Comments:
I rambled on about my experience in Thailand on the last page of the general UC app. and how it changed me to be a more global and aware person, also talked about individual projects I’ve taken on that didn’t go anywhere else on the app. SO BRAG IF YOU GOT IT!

Sorry for the grammar… I’m still in shock and hyperventilating…

Extracurriculars? Lots of sports, karate, theatre, in a band
Job/Work Experience: bartender, sports announcer, museum intern for 3 years
Volunteer/Community service: typical soup kitchen stuff, ^volunteered for my high school, museum internship started with volunteer work
Achievements/Awards: some high school stuff (most improved…), Salutorian speaker at graduation (that was a big deal for me)
Personal Statement: Honestly, random as *****. 1st prompt was about my personal history with filmmaking, 2nd was about what Snoop Dogg meant to my dad and I.

State (if OOS applicant): The best on the west side
Country (if international applicant):
School Type:CCC
Ethnicity:Blackanese
Gender:dude-ish
Income Bracket:high
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): geez…probably the diversity of my interests. My mom is from Hong Kong.

Reflection: I’ll explain below…pretty crazy all around.
Strengths: Perseverance, willingness to accept the challenge, humility. (qualities I really tried to emphasize in my app). 8 honors courses at CC. On paper my life is raaandom. Just odd.
Weaknesses: GPA (maybe not for film), no language, took 4.5 years to finish CC
Why you think you were accepted/rejected: academic resiliency, broad interests/accomplishments. studied abroad
General Comments: So I’m a 3.48, 22 year-old high school ***** up. I graduated in 07 and had a 1.87 gpa. Never took more than 13 units in one semester. But I took all the honors courses I could, 6 A’s, 2 B’s. I was also taking care of business personally. Worked a few jobs, studied abroad and traveled extensively on my own dime, faced some crushing failures, and some heartbreaking losses. My UC app was very weak next to most of yours with your phenomenal stats, so all I could do was be true to myself and my experiences. A PS about Snoop Dogg? Well honestly, I learned a lot about my identity from the Doggfather. And like I said, his music played an important role in my relationship with my father. I went with it, and even if I had failed, at least it was true to me.

To those who will apply again to Cal next year, or for grad school, remember: Cal will never make or define anyone. They always say it, but you know there’s no possible way for them to take all the qualified applicants. It’s chance.

I challenge you to have courage in the face of failure. If Cal passed you up this time, make it your goal to help them see it correctly the next. If you’re planning to appeal, appeal hard and confidently. Don’t let dejection overcome the strength you have within. If you’re SIRing elsewhere, crush it dude! Damn right you were Cal material so stick to it and prove it everyday from this day forth. Find the unique, awesome, and fulfilling opportunities that the campus you choose will offer and revel in that. A world-class education awaits all of us in 2012-13. Let’s get to it and make the most of these short lives!

Good luck, ya’ll.

State (if OOS applicant): California
Country (if international applicant): -

Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): N/A

Reflection: -
Strengths: GPA 4.0 and Volunteer service
Weaknesses: Did not finish prereqs!
Why you think you were accepted/rejeced: Maybe High GPA (4.0)

Accepted!!
Chemical Engineering
3.79 GPA

Didn’t get into ucla

@northbeach: Nah, UCB is just a state school. I’m going to Berkeley, it’s much better there.

@jnguyen: I guess I have to turn down SC for Berkeley :D. Didn’t apply to any of the ones you listed lol (prolly can’t get in at all)

IS THIS A ****ING MISTAKE??? 3.46 poli sci accepted for Fall 2012. W T F. I am too shocked to post the whole stats thing

Decision (including term): Accepted Fall
Intended Major: Computer Science (L&S)
UC GPA: 3.78
Major GPA: 4.0
Major Pre-reqs: Of the available pre-reqs 3/5 done, 2 I didn’t have time. The others weren’t available, which is pretty common.
IGETC: Yes

Which other UC’s did you apply to?
Applied: UCI, UCSD, UCB
Accepted: All
SIR: UCB (most likely) or UCSD

Extracurriculars: 6 years work experience in the field

State: California
School Type: California Community College
Ethnicity: White

Reflection: Figure out where you want to go and which major you want to do right away. Use assist.org and figure out the best group of classes and can be transferred to the schools you’ll most likely get into. Do your own research! The school administration is worthless. Aim for an A in every class, especially the easy ones.

Strengths: I have 6 years work experience in my field of study. I went to school full time while working full time. Was able to maintain a relatively high GPA (High for my major’s classes). My record showed a big jump in academic process (started out REALLY bad years ago, went back to school and started getting straight A’s). I also think my essays were pretty good.

Weaknesses: There are 2 pre-reqs I could have done. I had a really bad start years ago.

So, so, sooooo relieved. I’ve been a wreck all week.

has anyone gotten an EMAIL from them??

@sparkboy
huh—just a state school? Cal is one of the best schools in the world dude. which berkeley are you attending?

Hope this helps future transfers!

State (if OOS applicant):CA
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: CCC (Santa Barbara City College)
Ethnicity: caucasian
Gender: female
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): no hooks really.

Reflection: STILL SO GLAD I APPLIED! Of course I am disappointed, but overall I am happy I put myself out there. I think everyone who got accepted deserves to be at UCB and are going to be a great contribution to the school. Even the people who didn’t get accepted I believe deserve a UCB education, but the reality is that space is limited and the school had to make some hard choices. We’re all going to end up exactly where we should be! Can’t wait to SIR to UCSD and start my undergraduate education!
Strengths: strong upward trend, demonstrated interest in major and community service.
Weaknesses: lack of pre-reqs and not a very competitive GPA
Why you think you were accepted/rejected: Didn’t finish my pre-reqs and not a very competitive GPA.
General Comments: Congratulations to all those admitted!! Now let’s all go start out undergraduate careers!!!
