Reflection: I’ll explain below…pretty crazy all around.
Strengths: Perseverance, willingness to accept the challenge, humility. (qualities I really tried to emphasize in my app). 8 honors courses at CC. On paper my life is raaandom. Just odd.
Weaknesses: GPA (maybe not for film), no language, took 4.5 years to finish CC
Why you think you were accepted/rejected: academic resiliency, broad interests/accomplishments. studied abroad
General Comments: So I’m a 3.48, 22 year-old high school ***** up. I graduated in 07 and had a 1.87 gpa. Never took more than 13 units in one semester. But I took all the honors courses I could, 6 A’s, 2 B’s. I was also taking care of business personally. Worked a few jobs, studied abroad and traveled extensively on my own dime, faced some crushing failures, and some heartbreaking losses. My UC app was very weak next to most of yours with your phenomenal stats, so all I could do was be true to myself and my experiences. A PS about Snoop Dogg? Well honestly, I learned a lot about my identity from the Doggfather. And like I said, his music played an important role in my relationship with my father. I went with it, and even if I had failed, at least it was true to me.

To those who will apply again to Cal next year, or for grad school, remember: Cal will never make or define anyone. They always say it, but you know there’s no possible way for them to take all the qualified applicants. It’s chance.

I challenge you to have courage in the face of failure. If Cal passed you up this time, make it your goal to help them see it correctly the next. If you’re planning to appeal, appeal hard and confidently. Don’t let dejection overcome the strength you have within. If you’re SIRing elsewhere, crush it dude! Damn right you were Cal material so stick to it and prove it everyday from this day forth. Find the unique, awesome, and fulfilling opportunities that the campus you choose will offer and revel in that. A world-class education awaits all of us in 2012-13. Let’s get to it and make the most of these short lives!

Good luck, ya’ll.
