We’re not sure where to apply and maybe this is too much research. We have a displaced family member with us. In four years, they’ve overcome substantial detriments following their coming to us. We’re fortunate but they are not. We’ve been shocked by the scores for a first time taker (given their experiences) and don’t want to jinx it. We think this is fantastic so we are considering Ivies, LACs, Colonial/Patriot or their equivalent. So many posts suggest we are being unrealistic. We are NOT looking to live vicariously. act nouveau riche, vindicate some social position in the right zip code, or push a challenged child to self-hatred. De Tros. Given that America is certainly not getting any kinder (see the above sentence), we do want the best possible school with aide and good theatre, writing, and gaming. Any suggestions based on similar experiences? Thanks.

I’m not sure if you’ve looked at costs yet but I would recommend looking through this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html

You might be best off with a middle of the road school. My son has good SAT scores (not as good as yours) but mediocre grades. He has been offered scholarships already to some middle of the road type schools. Great scholarships are the best thing ever. Being able to go to school with no debt is more valuable than even an Ivy League education.

^These stats are pretty low for ivy league. The only way they would have a chance if some exception was made for hardship or the “life story.”

There are plenty of solid students with similar stats at state flagships. I heard a stat once for a very large state flagship that showed that almost everybody graduated in the top 25% of their class.

Good, even name-brand LACs are not necessarily more competitive admissions-wise than LACs. So you may have a chance at some good LACs.

If the admissions people can picture this kid as filling a niche (how much theater have they done?), then that would help a lot.
