2014 Fall UCSD Transfer Decisions Thread

@lindyk8 As you know, I got into UCSD as a computer science major even though I did not have many pre-reqs completed, but that was before it became impacted. A lot of things have changed since then. Now, UCSD will be screening for completion of major pre-reqs, this is what happens when UCSD classifies a major as impacted. The only major that has a pre-major status is engineering physics, for any other major, you are accepted directly into it. It doesn’t matter if you have all of the pre-reqs, or none of them, you will still be in the major.

If @HappyLifeMachine applies to any major within the school of engineering without completing the pre-reqs, CS in this case, he will be automatically rejected from the major. Assuming he gets in as his alternative major( UCSD allows applicants to pick two majors), he can take any classes that he is missing for CS in his first quarter. Then, in his second quarter, he can petition to get into the major, assuming he has all of the pre-reqs for CS completed. However, this is no guarantee that he will be allowed into the major. His chances mainly depend on how many people are weeded out of the major. Under this scenario, I would only recommend that he go to UCSD if it is his first choice.

@CollegeDropout1 Thank you for all the info and the idea of applying as a Math/CS major. I’m assuming that gaining admission as “undeclared” would mean the same thing (petitioning and whatnot)? A Math/CS major actually really intrigues me, but I’m not sure how much it would help me with a career in CS afterwards compared to a regular CS degree. It’s something, though, and like you said I could always petition after a quarter.

Edit-

I found some info about petitioning to get into the CS department at UCSD:
<a href=“Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)”>http://registrar.ucsd.edu/catalog/07-08/curric/CSE.html</a></p>

Apparently, under the exceptional admissions program if I can maintain a 3.5 GPA in 2+ math/CSE related courses then I can make the case for getting in. I’m not sure, however, if this would still apply if say in 2016 the major is no longer impacted?

It seems like there are options, tricky as they might be. Best bet is to go through the various scenarios with an advisor from UCSD. Best of luck!

Did you guys get admission packets in the mail when your were admitted? I never did. I found it odd, but I figured that UCSD was just being “green.” I have received other mail telling me to get my campus card, etc

@SoCalVetGal‌

I did. Perhaps your admission packet was lost in the mail. It happens.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, though. Nothing in the packet seemed essential or anything.

@Cayton Thanks! I wasn’t too worried. Just curious. I would have liked to receive it, just because I have never received an admissions packet from a University. (UCSD is the only school I applied too). But in the end, I am ok. ;-)

Ah, you should try to get one. It was nice. When classes start, go to admissions. They’re bound to have some lying around.

Anyone have thoughts on which colleges are preferred for Lit. majors? I chose: Marshall > Muir > Roosevelt > 6th > Warren > Revelle, in that order. Thoughts?

@Fulload That’s an excellent arrangement. If you complete IGETC, then you only have to take more courses of GE’s at UCSD, assuming you get into your top 4 choices.

I think you missed a number there? Just not sure what you mean here: "then you only have to take more courses of " What did you mean?

I do remember hearing that some UCSD colleges have extra pre-requisites. It seems like a weird set-up.

@Fullload Yeah! hahah I meant to say that you only had to take 2 more courses to complete upper division GE’s

Ok cool, glad to hear I chose wisely. If anyone out there at UCSD is a Lit. major, I’d love to hear what colleges you chose too, and recommend. I hear some are different than others depending on your major.

@Fulload I doubt any UCSD student is still on here! We really are socially dead.

I visited UCSD over the weekend. It looked deserted, not sure how to feel.

@CollegeDropout1‌

Well, it was the weekend and I don’t think Fall quarter has started at UCSD yet.

It was deserted because their summer session II just ended on Friday. Very few people would be on campus.

@collegedropout1 I think one of the keys to UCSD is to get involved in outside activities. There is so much to do there and my daughter knows ppl there who love it. But I’m not sure on the weekends that the campus is full per se.

@Cayton Well, that explains a lot!

@Lindyk8 Yes! I already sign up for a bunch on engineering activities, I’m not sure if they will help me have the American Pie experience, but they still seem like fun

I have a question. I’m currently a sophomore in college, but will be a junior by fall 2015. Should I apply to UCSD as a junior for fall 2015?
