@cochoa14 I did… and it really killed me inside. But I think it will be turn out to be the right choice in the end.

@DescartesQ I think I’m going to do the same thing… I haven’t sir’d yet because I’m still unsure. I’m going to visit ucla tomorrow for the last time and see what happens. I’ve been stressing over this over a month. Wish me luck, and maybe we’ll meet up at ucsd! Are you planning to stay at the village?

finally submitted my SIR! does anyone know if there are steps to take beyond the preliminary housing application? it was really short and i did it back in march and i think it pretty much just put me on the list for housing. but has anyone been able to do anything else with the housing application? I know we’re required to make a prepayment at some point but i’m not sure when that is.

I was accepted this morning! I am so excited, I already SIR’d!

Poli Sci/Int’l Relations
GPA: 3.34
Applied: UCSD, UCLA, UCI, UCR, SDSU
Accepted: All (was initially waitlisted to UCSD and admitted on appeal)

@cochoa14 I turned down my admission to UCLA for UCSD.

@Knhofto What new information did you submit to overturn their decision?

@collegedropout1 I took a five year break from school to work and care for my husband who returned from Iraq with significant physical and mental injuries. He couldn’t walk for almost a year but was eventually able to make a full recovery from his physical injuries. Unfortunately, it took about 5 years of ups and downs before he was finally mentally stable. I had a 2.3 GPA from my three years at a CC prior to my break. I talked about caring for my husband in my initial application but I think it was overlooked as UCSD doesn’t usually read personal statements.

My daughter was finally diagnosed a few weeks ago with epilepsy. It took almost four months of testing and observation to figure out what was wrong with her, as she doesn’t have the typical generalized (jerking/convulsive) seizures that most people associate with epilepsy.

In my appeal, I took a couple of sentences to talk, again, about caring for my husband. I then talked about my daughter’s diagnosis and how I was accepted to other UC’s but attending any of them would mean, in the event of an emergency, it would take me almost two hours to get back to my daughter. Then I said something like, although I will be dealing stressful personal circumstances, I know I will still be academically successful at UCSD. When I returned to college, my husband was laid off from work and I had to work full-time until he found another job, I witnessed a girl commit suicide in my school library a week before finals, and then my daughter developed these (at the time) unknown neurological problems. In spite of all this, I was able to get a 3.9 GPA, bringing my cumulative GPA up to a 3.34. I then said that UCSD can not only offer me the excellent academic atmosphere I desire, but also the peace of mind that being close to my daughter will bring.

@knhofto Did you go to Mesa?

@SDSUCSD I did go to Mesa. I moved to Grossmont after that spring semester.

@knhofto Okay, just wondering because you mentioned the suicide. I knew the girl personally, went to elementary school with her… She was my twin sister’s childhood bestfriend. It’s crazy to hear it mentioned on these threads but I’m glad it somehow contributed to your appeal. Your story as a whole sounds like a very strong reason to stay in SD though, with or without the mentioning of Sarah, so I’m happy you made it into UCSD!

I just declined my offer. Not going to lie, a bit saddened by it. From UCLA,UCI, and UCSD, UCSD was my second choice. Best of luck to those that will be attending UCSD.

@Tik1127 why did you decline? where will you attend?

@knhofto I go to mesa too. How awful that you witness the suicide. When ever I walk by the library, I think about it.

@elisahow they only ask for the high school transcript for domestic students, not international. It is to insure that the student has taken american history.

@SoCalVetGal

I declined because I was accepted to UCLA as well. I live 20 minutes away from the university, so, I can live at home. I visited UCSD(Knowing that I would still be going to UCLA, regardless of the visit) but I I like the area of La Jolla(Which I have visited plenty of times before). Even though I would’ve started as a History major, rather than a Pre,it was going to UCLA is not something I was ever going to pass up.

Are you going to be attending UCSD?

@tik1127 yes. I will. It is the only school I applied to. I sort of wanted to apply to UCLA, but, I didn’t have another 70 dollars and I really didn’t want to move for various reasons. One of my classmates is transferring to UCLA as Pre-history as well.

@SDSUCSD This caught me completely off guard. I have rewritten this a few times. I am having a hard time explaining myself because all of the feelings I have can’t possibly compare to what you and her family feel/felt. I did not know Sarah, I didn’t even know her name until you told me. The school was so tight-lipped about what happened, which I completely understand and respect that it was for the privacy of her family. Finally finding out her name after all of this time has brought up so much emotion for me. Even though I did not know her, I grieved deeply for your friend and still think about her often. I am so very sorry for your loss, and I hope the rest of her family and friends are doing well. At the time, I had taken on an incredibly large course load and between school and work, I had very little free time to spend with my daughter. Sarah’s death made me realize that I needed to cutback my workload because, if anything ever happened to my daughter, all the work I was doing would be meaningless and I would be filled with regret for not finding a better balance that included more time with her.

@SoCalVetGal

I thought about only applying to UCLA as well(I was somewhat confident I was getting in) but I played it safe and applied to UCI and UCSD as well, as safety’s(USC as well). I thought UCB but that was too far for my liking, as I have stated before, only way I was leaving SoCal was for an Ivy. But yeah, good look to you at UCSD. Hope you prosper to the fullest.

i’m not crazy for declining UCLA for UCSD right? everyone else said im crazy for turning down UCLA. But i dont feel like it’s a school for me.

How do you decline offer? @Tik1127 can you help me?

@cochoa14

Sure thing. Go here

https://act.ucsd.edu/studentApplicants2/admitpacket

I had to hit lost PW to retrieve it. So, when you get on, I just hit command F, and decline, and it came up. You will click on it. Then it becomes self-explantatory. If you have trouble, let me know.
