Hi everyone. I’m a mom with a junior who is looking Ivy, NESCAC, Patriot, Colonial and one service academy.

Son has been 2 year starter on his 2012 state D1A championship team, will be 3 years by fall.

My question for the moment is quick … now that we have grades and scores in hand that are within the range of colleges he is looking at, if there are one or two schools which are actually his 1st choice even though not top of the range of all the schools who have contacted him, is it permissible or advisable to indicate our strong interest this far ahead? These are potentially schools which might think they are being viewed as safeties, when in fact our son might want to go there first choice, though not limit his options immediately.

Is there a downside to emailing or calling the school and letting them know this early of our particular interest? There are two schools in particular and both contacted us first, though only by the usual junior email. Thanks in advance as we start this :)

So if I understand your plight, your son’s primary interest is in schools that may be wary of being used as safeties, and you want to know if it’s premature to let these schools know that they are top choices…

If he’s already visited the campuses, met the coach, seen the facilities, etc and they are still his top choices, I’d say it’s fine to let them know. But if he’s basing his preferences on schools, coaches and programs that look good on paper…I’d urge you to take some (unofficial) visits first. In our case, some schools that seemed great on paper lost their luster after a visit or 2.

Yes, most definitely make it clear to these schools that S is very serious about them, BUT ALSO make it clear to ALL the other schools that S is very serious about them.

Much can happen between now and late fall - both with your S and the schools he currently is considering, as well as with some other schools he may not be currently considering.

At this point, I suggest, you and S keep your options open as wide as possible.

Make as many contacts you can right away by sending film links and emails (See my posts to Fballer11 under the thread “D3 Recruiting Question”).

From my experience, there is no such thing as too early anymore, based on what I am hearing. If its genuine, think its a good idea to at least express the interest.
