totally agreed

^ moosemaster

is that your conjecture or something that most people agree on? (deferred/waitlisted if you’re “too good”) i understand how it could potentially be better for matriculation rates, but that seems kind of harsh lol.

By the way, based off of a book I read by a former Dartmouth admissions officer, the Ivies have a particular way of dealing with high school GPA. Class rank is their prefered piece of information and if class rank is given, they focus on class rank. They don’t even bother with the actual GPA number. If anything other than an exact class rank is given (i.e. percentile, GPA only), then it’s up to the college to estimate the student’s standing in comparison to his/her classmates based on information the guidance counselor gives. Because of the student’s more ambiguous case, much more weight is given to the student’s standardized test scores and teacher recommendations (if the recommendations are deemed reliable). In this process, the student almost always gets jipped. The single most important thing your guidance counselor can do is to emphasize how much better you are compared to your classmates and to give an actual rank. In fact, you will notice that an overwhelming number of deferred kids last year only reported a percentile rather than an exact rank. This hurt them.

@moose, I doubt that Yale worries about “overqualified” candidates. 78.5% matriculation for Harvard 72% for Yale. I agree that CC might be a top heavy representation of what the majority of applicant’s statistics but I highly doubt that kids get deferred/rejected because of that. Actually, two years ago, Yale had one of its highest matriculation rates and that’s why the admit rate fell to its all time low… Hopefully this year its better.

12 days OMGOMGOMG

For you guys who complain about coming from PA: try living in California.

well thank you moosemaster, i’m very flattered…
I hope they don’t reject me in thinking I would be going somewhere “better”. Yale is the only top 20 school I applied to(the rest I did were LACs), and if that’s where the money is best, that is where I’ll go

tristan101:
that was most definitely just my conjecture. of course, I would never try to make a generalization that applied to all or even most people. Do i think that some kids get deferred because they are too good? yes. Do most of them? I don’t know. And I know that it is Yale we all talking about. There are very few “better” schools out there. I’m sorry that I sounded as if I was stating a fact that always applied. This was just my guess, and I certainly do not believing that it applies to all or most cases–just a good chunk of cases maybe.

*believe

I am just as mystified about the admissions process as you guys are and I guess I was just kinda groping for some kind of comforting explanation or pattern. But I think overqualification is a possibility. There are so many nuances that could affect the admissions process and honestly, I should not have started the topic–too much controversy and sheer possiblities lol

Do you think making it known that you love Yale and it is your first choice would increase your chances? It sounds like it would.

I also heard a rumor, don’t quote me, that admissions officers get bonuses based on how many of their admitees choose the school in question.

definitely. Going to Yale just for its prestige is shallow. If you have good reasons for applying to Yale, DEFINITELY tell them in an essay–an admissions officer would probably be much more impressed if you did your homework about the school than if you treated the school as “just another college”

To Everyone:

Throughout my comments, now and in the future, you may notice that I tend to contradict myself, not make sense, or make hasty conclusions–my mind has a bad habit of spitting out half formed thoughts and my true opinion usually only matures after I sit down and think a little afterwards. It may very likely just be me because as a child I was diagnosed with some psychological problems and my mind is actually screwed up a little. So, if I say something sensitive, please be patient, I will probably post a “disclaimer/explanatory” type thing later to ensure you guys that I am not completely irrational. Just an FYI :)

@christiansoldier- true story, my sympathy to you

are all of you pennsylvanians from the philadelphia area? (I am)
ps if you lived in hawaii, chances are you wouldn’t be as good of a student as you are now
there’s a reason more good students come out of certain areas. usually if an area has a low number of high-achieving students, it means the school system/financial condition of that region isn’t as good. so it’s a tradeoff really :)

hello! finally got an account :)
