2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

Anymore SCA decisions today?

I’m super nervous, because at worst I could be expecting a rejection at this late in the month. ):

is it possible to get spring admitted applying as a sophomore from California CC?
so getting admitted for Junior Spring semester?

@cctousc Nope, I actually intended to go to UCLA over USC and even started to pay for housing. I just had such a bad time at student orientation that it made me withdraw my decision to attend UCLA pretty much the next day.

In what way do you mean? How do other students view non-traditional students? I actually couldn’t always tell them apart. I remember being so surprised when I was taking a Spanish class with (mostly) other spring admits and when one girl said she was 34, I was surprised! I thought I was easily the oldest student in that class :stuck_out_tongue:

@zettasyntax I will probably ask you the stupidest question but what do you mean by non-traditional students?

This is really a question for anyone to answer, but why are most of you pro-USC compared to other schools like UC-Berkeley, LA, and Davis? USC seems like the best school for me, but I don’t know as much as the majority of you, given that I’m from the Philadelphia-ish area.

@masechka1988 Hah, I guess it’s not really that specific of a term, but it means exactly what you would think. A student that isn’t a “traditional” student. Say, like a student that didn’t go to high school at all (basically me) or one that dropped out. Or a student that went to college and is coming back after a years long break. I’m sure there are other examples, but that’s basically what a non-traditional student is

@penntousc I was actually pro-UCLA until I went to orientation. My cousin was performing in a musical and I fell in love with the campus - it was like a dream :stuck_out_tongue: At orientation, the orientation advisor basically handed us a list and said “Here are the courses you can take”. I wanted to take other classes not on the list, but he said I couldn’t do such a thing until later on (so they would probably be at capacity anyway) and he really made sure I chose classes only off the list too; too much hovering for my taste. At USC, you were basically free that add whatever classes you wanted; it was so different. To get clearance for a course, all it took was a quick email - that easy. At least from that point, it made it seem like you have a lot more freedom at USC to take classes that you actually want to take whereas at UCLA, I really felt pressured to take the classes they wanted me to take. I could have just had a bad orientation advisor, but the whole experience turned me off. The orientation was also quite long, lol. It was from 8AM to about 8PM whereas the USC one was 8AM to 2PM with other opitional activities,

@zettasyntax oh ok I see! Thank you for the explanation  So I probably am a non-traditional student too. Does the admissions office pay attention on that?

@zettasyntax do you happen to remember seeing anyone’s restrictions change multiple times in past years? Mine had said 05/25 (which was the first time I was able to see it so I don’t know about changes before then) and then the second change was the day after it said 8pm 05/26 but I have no stars audit yet. I got an SGR on the 18th and sent it in the same day. I poked around some old threads but didn’t find too much. Any insight?

So I’ve heard housing for transfer is not guaranteed, does anybody know how likely it is for us to get the housing we want? And if we dont, is it easy to find off-campus housing at this time of year?

@penntousc USC is a private school with a large endowment (budget) the others you mentioned are public CA schools. While fine or great schools too, they have the usual public issues of crowding, budget woes and cuts, and fighting for resources as a student. Not horrible but more than some want to tolerate.

@masechka1988 I would definitely think so. In your essays, it might be something they find admirable. I was really proud to hear of this one guy that was in his 30s and wanted to get his degree after being in the military. I guess he had a double hook in that he was a veteran and a non-trad, but I certainly think it can make some people stand out

@thepinksun Well, for some people, getting an SGR sometimes caused a restrictions change (not always though) and when the final decision was made, it would change again. It’s really weird that your restrictions changed on the 25th and 26th; that’s one I’ve never heard of. It would make sense if it changed around the time you got your SGR and now, but changing twice in such a short amount of time is strange. Sorry I couldn’t offer too much help, but I’ve never really seen a case like that one.

@thepinksun the first time when I logged in OASIS was May 24 and the restrictions was updated on that day May 24, there was not any update after. If yours was updated may be it means you will hear from them today or tomorrow

My restrictions haven’t changed since 5/2…
They had asked for winter grades and I sent them.
Emailed my admissions counselor and I was told my application is complete and that nothing’s missing…
But again, no restriction change. Any idea what this can mean?

@masechka1988 hmmm maybe ours updated the same day we got access because they accessed our accts/info in order to change the pin.

@zettasyntax ah man. Thanks for the input! Im starting to think emailing them for my pin may have had something to with it. I also think my stars audit isn’t showing on my browser period. I use chrome so I have issues with that sometimes.

I am pretty sure the stars audit just shows a blank white screen with everyone who has access to Oasis.

*That has not been accepted

@thepinksun Oh yeah, it’s a good idea to check both of the STARS reports because one of them does indeed show up as a blank white screen for some browsers (with Chrome, I believe you have to click on this shield icon or something and click “load unsafe scripts”). I’m sure this isn’t a common problem, but I always like to check because I remember chatting with another user on here and when he sent me a screenshot of his interactive STARS page, I noticed that it didn’t load  If anything, maybe be on the lookout for a STARS change tomorrow. I believe mine changed around 2AM.

@zettasyntax please tell me what you think. I am 27 years old, graduated from high school in 2005 in Russia. Came to the US in 2012. In 2014, I started attending CC, and during those two years studying in CC, my two children were born. So having two babies I was able to maintain 3.78 GPA. My biggest issue is that I had to drop all the classes in one semester due to the complicated pregnancy, for that reason I have 4 Ws. I explained it in my essay of course. So do you think it makes me to stand out for them somehow?

@zettasyntax thanks for the help!! I’ll definitely try that when I get in later because everytime I looked it was a blank screen.

@masechka1988 On the campus tours (I eavesdrop on them all the time), the guides always like to mention how diverse the USC campus is with all the flags they have at VKC :stuck_out_tongue:  so I think being from Russia makes you stand out (most of the international people I know so far haven’t really been Russian). Also, I know USC says they don’t like W’s but in your case, you had a good reason for them and it isn’t exactly a pattern. If you had two straight semesters with all W’s, that would be quite a cause for concern. I think your background would appeal to me if I was reading your application because you had a lot on your plate while attending CC (for me, I had no job, nothing; so I really had no other responsibilities) and your GPA is very solid. The only thing it could come down to is whether or not you have the prep courses they want to see.
