2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

I’ve heard that admission counselors have control over sgr applicants’ decision. It this somewhat true?

Have any annenberg SGRs heard back yet?

hi guys! I just signed up to this forum right now because I am a transfer applicant for this fall. I am just as nervous as you guys are because I am a SGR and i submitted my transcripts on May 24th…USC received it June 1st and still to this day, they have not changed my portal haha. It is a long long waiting game and, in my opinion, very cruel to keep stringing us along like this :frowning: my stats are:

Elmhurst College
cumulative GPA: 3.75 (i did poorly first semester and then straight A’s second semester)
High School GPA: 4.5
MAJOR: psych with emphasis on pre-med
I had 2 recommendations (or one…i honestly cannot remember)
my essays were pretty good (in my opinion)—because I am strongly geared towards psychology, I talked about how my college experience was at elmhurst college according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs…and also how my new interest in politics influenced my career choice to go into medicine.
Credits completed: I completed all required gen ends and had 30.00 grad points with 9.75 earned credits (EC is really weird in that sense that they only let you take 4 credits a semester but they transfer over as more.)

I am just as scared and overwhelmed by this process as the next guy. I think, honestly, the more we try to break down the statistics and systematics of the whole admissions process, we’re ultimately driving ourselves insane. I think that bottom line, there are some people they want and others they don’t. But ultimately, we are all great candidates and applicants and no school or university can take that pride and ambition that we have, away from us. Congrats to all who have found out and Good luck to those who haven’t either (like me lol). And to those who got rejected…you’re definitely onto bigger and better things…much greater than the future you envisioned

Also, if someone can let me know WHY MY PORTAL HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED and if we are expected to hear back in mid july (from what their admissions counselor has told them) that would greatly appreciated…CHEERS

I’ve read last year’s post and it seems that most ppl who’ve made it till mid-July are highly accepted. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone get rejected at mid-July. So if it means waiting till mid-July to be admitted, I’ll take that any day.

This week will be crazy. I expect a lot of decisions to come since my counselor said most decisions will be out late June/ early July.

@mr.transfer @pomeranian4rich I just got off the phone and she implied that the reason for my rejection was my relatively weak Calc grade. My counselor said she couldn’t be specific but that Marshall likes to see strong grades in Business Calc, but I regular Calc 1 and got a B.

@izrobins Did you have a secondary major?

@izrobins what we’re your stats are u still going to submit a appeal?

do accpetance letters come through ups or usps or fed ex?

@xerxes96 pretty sure it uses usps i don’t think they would pay extra just to tell us we got in or rejected

@xerxes96 Yeah, daRamz is right. USPS. I remember hearing a beep though when my acceptance packet came last year. Although, I didn’t get a cool box or whatever they’re sending this year :stuck_out_tongue: And I’m relatively sure that international is by DHL; at least according to a student that got in from Dubai last year

@zettasyntax you are such an asset to this thread!! so informative =D>

@thepinksun I’m pretty sure only one Annenberg applicant has posted about getting accepted, the rest of us are still anxiously waiting, and no one from Annenberg has posted a rejection yet either, I have a feeling they’ll all be coming at once in the next week or 2… X_X

I’m looking to transfer in 2017 (to Marshall), however my community college’s business calc class does not transfer to USC (that I’m aware of). Does anyone have any advice for what I should take in place of that, or should I take that business calc course anyways? I’m already registered for calc 1 in the fall, but I’m not sure whether I should take calc 2 or business calc in the spring semester, or even if calc 1 is enough. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

@penntousc Call your admission counselor and get the answer from them. The risk is too great to move forward with coursework advice from any of us. You’ll be better off in the long run if you explain your exact situation to them. Good luck!!

@LACCryan I’ve already contacted her quite a bit, and I’ll have the 30 credits to transfer, I’m just debating on whether or not I should take calc 2 (which transfers) or business calc (unsure if it transfers) because they like to see business calc.

If youre not interested in taking a non transferable course have you thought of a minor that interest you which a course offered at your cc that could tranfer

You should call and ask him/her if your class transfers. I don’t think we’re much of a help to know if it transfers especially since we don’t know what CC or univ. it is to see if any of us have been to the same one to help you out

@izrobins Ah that makes a lot of sense! I heard something about Marshall being strict about their math requirements. But I remember from @zettasyntax He said that this applicant got a C in his business calculus class but was still admitted into marshall! I guess he had some extraordinary ec to make up for that grade.

I’ve taken calculus 1 and 2 in fall and spring. Both of them are A’s. I hope this is enough for their liking because I have no EC at all.

@izrobins did you take calculus 1 at cornell? I think it is reasonable to get a B in calculus if you’re at a top university like cornell. Getting an A in calculus at any community college will be a breeze and easier than taking it at a top university. The USC admission should’ve taken that into account.

@penntousc I suggest you take calculus 2 if the business calc at your school doesn’t transfer! I might be biased but if USC sees that you can take and manage calculus 2 with an A, you could be a stronger applicant since I’ve heard business calculus is really easy compare to regular calculus. And I’m pretty sure usc will take into account that regular calculus is superior and harder than business calculus.

@pomeranian4rich Calculus at a CC isn’t always an easy A. My Calc I prof was educated at Ohio State and taught the class at the same level as a 4-year university. He took the hardest possible problems for the tests. By the end of the class, only 18 out of the original 60 students were still showing up, and only 2 students recieved an A.

@john6311 right. @penntousc I’m curious to know what your counselors response was during the contact you made about which class will/won’t transfer?

Although the popular reaction is to take biz calc because USC likes to “see it”, the truth of the matter is you only have 30 units so there is a real need for other classes that will in fact transfer. This is why advice on here shouldn’t be as regarded as what your counselor from USC tells you directly. With that said, you’ll be competing with students that have 60+ units completed so a non-transferable class won’t hold nearly as much weight as other coursework that USC certainly deems transferable. Bottom line, your spinning wheels here, do yourself a huge favor and get the answers you need from SC.

I know it sounds like I’m being a jerk but I wouldn’t want to make a miss-step relying on somebody’s hearsay advice - get your answers from the source.
