2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

THE appeal to transfer to usc is not just one reason for me john6311

It lets me transfer a year earlier rather than going to a UC or CSU

Its the curriculum which lets me go for ine of their progressive degrees which lets u come out with both a bachelors and masters which i intend to pursue

The money well yes its expensive but if its like anything like the other private schools i applied to like (not top schools but eeeeh) pepperdine or university of san Francisco they would have provided me with around 20 thousand in financial aid scholarships and all which costs about the same as a UC to me

The housing thing personally if u look at the roomate thing and get a 2 bedroom apartment a ten to 20 min commute (not accounting for the real traffic u face ) u can split it around 700 and its decent (carpooling together is an option.

And well there are a bunch of ways you can get involved in campus sure youll drive to and from school but honestly im not paying 1000 to share a room bruh im having my own room just saying lol plus theres more to your university experience than usc all of so cal is your playground which is kickass especially if youre coming from out of state make the most of it why be cramped up in a box while getting robbed for rent

I got it from the “live in Pasadena and drive to campus” so you can pay less for housing a couple pages back which obviously isn’t a solution everyone wants so maybe I generalized too much. btw, Lorenzo is not a cheaper option, it is about $1k per month per bed, two beds per room. Feature rich, but far from campus and unreliable shuttles. Gorgeous yes, but certainly its own set of issues. Really stinks they don’t have housing options for transfers, the entire process has to be frustrating. If you have to live outside the patrol zone, try to have a car. Don’t risk your safety for any school.

Agree, if living outside the patrol zone, that means you are some distance from campus (> 1 mile) and I would never want my students walking an unpatrolled route at night. Even within the patrol zone there are a lot of holes where you see no one keeping an eye on things. They amp up when there is an incident, then as semesters go by, new students come in unaware, and they get lazy about patrolling again till something else happens. Then they return to the corners. Its a cycle I have seen for years. Find housing as close as you can, it is worth every penny.

Exactly how bad would you guys say the area is? When I applied to schools as a freshman I intended on going to Temple (I’m near philly) and the area of North Philadelpia is notoriously bad, I’m not sure if anyone on here knows enough to be able to make a comparison…

@daRamz what is the budget that you’re looking into. After I researched a couple I couldn’t really find any less than $800 per month per person. And that options are out of that patrol zone everyone is saying to avoid

It’s a bustling urban environment with all the good and bad that comes with it. Be street smart - be aware at all times, but even more so at night. Don’t walk down a dark street alone with your iphone 6 gleaming like a beacon in the night. Walk with someone else at night. How safe it is depends on your perspective. If you are street smart (like someone from Philly) you will be fine, if you are not, you will learn to be really quickly. One the one end and side of campus, do not live past Adams or Vermont. The other side of Vermont is somewhat ok (but not great) for a block or two right by campus (behind Subway/Smart and Final at Vermont & 36th), but a few blocks out, no. The other side of Adams, no. Fine to go to Ralph’s, but don’t live beyond it.

Right around campus there is often a ton of people out and about, but every block you go away from it, the less you see the students you want to see around to feel safe.

@John6311 @daRamz very nicely put

I was told that the annual cost of living actually did include food expenses at the USC transfer day. I mean I’m not sure how accurate it is, but they of course told us that it was just an estimate. Living in LA is definitely expensive and the area around USC isn’t the best of neighborhoods. I feel as though sometimes students are targeted because robbers assume that anyone who attends the school likely has tons of money (since tuition is not cheap).

I can also confirm that living further away doesn’t necessarily mean cheaper rent. This is only if you leave the DTLA area, but it will end up being a very long commute because of traffic. :frowning:

It’s really unfortunate that they ran out of campus housing! Especially since it seems a lot of people live out of state or too far away. Let me know if you guys have any questions about living in LA!

Yeah but honestly i can put up with a bit of traffic (id love to live near there and not drive my truck down to school)…but commuting is not that bad especially if my possible roomate had a vehicle to carpool with a pass is 364 a semester and id be down to half and half on the pass especially since most classes at usc are in the morning which could work out the farther you go out for an apartment the better

i go on these apartment and real estate sites and a two room apartments ranges from 1200 to 1800 a month which wed split half and half depending how far off campus u want to go

I was hoping to find someone in the same situation who maybe 1000 dollars for a shared room is not ideal for you but still wantst that usc vibe and wants to live a bit ways off campus and wants to participate with on campus activities

I dont mind waiting on eachother in between classes either theres a ton to do on campus and well lets just say this guy is going to take advantage of the gym on campus so thats one of the things i think might turn people off to that waiting on eachother in between classes which i could handle

I think as us transfers right now, we are just trying to unravel the stress and frustration with not having housing available for us. I believe that if housing was available, we would all live on campus in a heartbeat. However just because we aren’t, it doesn’t mean we are just there to attend class and leave. We will make more of an effort to be included and take advantage of USC and all the opportunities it has to offer. Nonetheless, I know there are some off campus housing that maybe still available and if not, we just have to keep searching because we will be starting in a month…YIKES! :S

If anyone’s portal updates with the admission decision please notify!! This is going to be a long Monday

@anxiety2016 i think that it will update starting at like 9 ish because thats when the admissions office opens

@jquejque yeah true. My parents just bought me a car so I don’t want to live in a jank area and be concerned that my car may be stolen

all i want is for them to start sending decisions on the portal…

help:
how long do you guys think that it will take for my portal to update with a decision? I got the ability to benefit notification on friday at around 11 am!

Mine didn’t update until about 10:30-11

@eoverland call them and see what they say

Son got into Marshall - we know from STARS report. I can’t remember - how do we tell if it’s Spring or Fall? What are the codes?

it says catalog year 20163. Is that Spring or Fall?

My ability to benefit disappeared. Anyone know what this means?
