2016 Edition: High School Graduation Gifts

I searched the forum, but it looks like it has been awhile since this has come up: What is an appropriate cash HS graduation gift for 1) kids you have watched grow up but are not related to, and 2) kids that you barely know, but are fairly close to their parent(s)?

Personally, I have given multi-tools. Both kids said they were useful and they come in huge variety with varied prices as well. Someone suggested small Brita water pitchers, logo items of school the kid will attend, picture frames, etc.

  • checks for $20.16
  • I've given California State flags to those heading out of state for college...(dorm decoration)
  • beach towel in college colors (my kid got one and it had his name embroidered on it)
  • flip flops from the college bookstore
  • gift cards to Container store....or to a restaurant near their college campus

Also bought pen/mechanical pencil sets for graduates. I think they’re attractive. For folks I knew well, put together some desk essentials kits in zippered pouches with all those little things that are handy to have on or near desk–scissors, tape, marker, pen, pencil, glue, ruler, assortment of envelopes, postage stamps, etc.

Gift cards to Bed Bath and Beyond came in handy!

Along with any Bed Bath & Beyond coupons you have collected.

We’ve given Starbucks gift cards if we know kiddos are fans (and lots of them are). Target is popular too, so we give GC for that store. Also, many kids still buy songs from Apple so itunes GC are a hit. If you’re going to give a GC to a specific store, though, make sure there is one nearby. D loves the Container Store, but there is not one close to her college at all. Nor is there are Starbucks all that close, which makes her very sad.

$20 gift card to a pizza place near the college.
