2016 Gardening Thread! Whatcha Planting?!

I’m sure many parts of the country are already knee deep in planting! Here in Ohio I CANNOT wait to turn my raised bed over this weekend and finally plant a couple of early crops - peas for one!

I planted garlic for the first time in the fall and the greens look GREAT. Hoping all the development below ground is going as well!

Have decided that I might get a “grow bag” and try some fingerlings or small red potatoes just outside of my raised bed - anyone have any potato tips for me?

Whatcha growing? Who’s already planted? Who’s spending time in the garden this weekend? Who is trying to grow something new?!

Nothing yet. We had 5 inches of snow last week and ha don’t been above 55ish since. I grow my veggies in pots and won’t do anything until end of May at the earliest. And I can’t really get into my flower beds as spring clean-up guy hasn’t even come yet, Hopefully next week.

Yeah, we had 8 inches of snow last Saturday and tomorrow a week later, we are in 60-70 degree range this weekend!

I planted garlic last fall too. I hope they’re getting nice and big!

I planted peas over the winter and they’re done now. Tomatoes and peppers are in, but I need more. Exciting time!

Whatcha planting?

Nothing yet. Will be doing a major weeding blitzkrieg this Sunday!

What am I planting? I think so far the only thing I can plant is popsicles.

Seriously though…its supposed to warm up beginning today so maybe this weekend I’ll have H rototill and put in some peas…

We just cut down three of our neighbors trees and I am hoping that might make growing things a little easier. I planted five blueberry bushes last fall so we’ll see how they do. One pretty flowering shrub near our garage is looking like it bit the dust. I’m really not sure why - we had a pretty mild winter. Our rear yard has been a mess for the last year as we put an addition on the back of the house. I planted a hundred daffodils and they are looking great. Things are beginning to come up in the rain garden. I’ve got my younger son working on a project to regrade the area behind our garage which drops down steeply into a set of terraces where we can plant something for the neighbors to look at. It has to be low maintenance because we can’t see it, but I’ve felt badly about what a mess it was, especially after the builders pushed all the rocks they dug up over there!

I bought Wall of Water plant protectors last year, so my tomatoes and two pepper plants are in… this even though we may get a foot of snow on Sunday :frowning: Which means, I’m cutting all my blossomed tulips – tons of fresh flowers in the house = luxury!

I also planted a flowering quince bush – in the early spring it’s one giant, blazing mass of flowers.

Earlier this spring, I put in peony bulbs, and gladiolus.

Waiting till early May for the rest of planting. It can’t come soon enough. The poets are right: April is the cruelest month.

@katliamom, where are you that you might get a foot of snow!? Ugh!

Denver… though the amount of expected snow differs from forecaster to forecaster… they never really know what will happen… right now they’re saying between 4 and 14 inches! Way to cover themselves!

Ah - when I was in Denver in the fall the locals were telling me - “you can have three days - day one it’s 70, day two 6 inches of snow, day 3 it’s 70 again!”

It was finally warm enough to do some work outside today. I pulled stray grass puffs from the mulch around my maple tree.

We had a mild winter but that last snow then the few days where it went below freezing at night after that did a number on trees which already had buds. The apple crop is in really bad shape. One of the local orchards said they’ve lost 90% of their crop. :frowning:

I don’t know if I’ll plant anything. While some parts of Ca received a good amount of rain my area did not. We get our water from a lake nearby and it still isn’t even close to being anywhere near normal. I feel guilty if I water any outside plants. I will probably just plant a few herbs and a couple of tomato plants in pots.
In the meantime I am enjoying all the beautiful wild flowers and roses that are in bloom. The flowers have loved the bit of rain we did get.

Today I planted my bottom in a chair outside in the sun.

It was fabulous!

Cleaned up my vegetable beds and planted tomatoes today. I’m an optimist.

Setting up a raised bed for the first time. We’re in a new house with lots of land, but I need something manageable for after work/weekend gardening. I could use tips on the soil make-up and what to plant first & when. It’s been in the high 30’s overnight and high 40’s during the day with plenty of sunshine.

I’ve set up the walls and floor (construction wire) and will set up a U-shaped cover w/plastic sheeting. Does anyone know what to use for the U? I’ve attached 1/2 pvc tubes to the inside of the box to receive the U.

Once I’ve got the plastic cover up, I guess I’ll plant peas first, but what else can go in early?

Kale. I was at Home Depot and they had a 9 pack. So I stuck some in a pot and some in the ground at my new house. Despite snow and cold, they are all surviving. At the old house, I sprinkled my usual pack of salad mix in a big pot and tiny sprouts are making themselves obvious. First day over 70 here! Sun and decent weather is forecast for the next week.

Spinach, chard, kale, radishes, and of course pansies.

Carrots too, and arugula. I used to grow greens over the winter in Maryland. It would snow and one time the little arugula plants looked like they had been ironed flat to the ground when the snow finally melted! They slowly popped back up- I wish I had taken a photo each day to record it. Yum, they were good. Snow is a good insulator.

My chives and thyme overwintered in a planter, so I imagine you could plant them early if you don’t already have some.
