***2016 National Merit Finalist Thread***

Curious where NMFs majoring in computer science are going? Son applied to some of the big NMF scholarship schools (Baylor, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arizona, ASU, Minnesota, USC) …love to hear your take on some of your comparison visits. we’ve been to Alabama, Minnesota and USC, and are at Oklahoma right now

@3scoutsmom Thanks. I just assumed that colleges received a list of NMF, because she has received invites to a couple of NMF receptions.

@lonetreegrad Colleges likely made those invitations based on the list of kids who made NMSF. Since the large majority move on to NMF status it is a pretty good population for them to target for recruiting, plus some give NMSF awards too. D regularly gets mail and/or email from OU, ASU, UNM and a few others about NMF opportunities and events.

Her current list has two NMF schools, WVU and UCF. She has a competitive full tuition offer from Pitt, which she prefers over WVU. So now it is really UCF, Pitt and waiting on further scholarship news from U of Delaware and Tulane.

@RedbirdDad my D is at ASU right now. Will let you know. (She also applied to USC but won’t visit unless she gets in). We know an NMF at OU who absolutely raves about what they do for the NMFs there.

My DS is headed to UVA - no money for NMFs sadly. @wandlmink, your daughter will love Rice! We live 3 blocks from the campus - its beautiful and located centrally in a great part of Houston.

Thanks @Skates76 D has also been accepted to some of these schools (eg, UCF) with full ride and full tuition for NMF. I just wasn’t sure if we need to inform all the schools on her list about her new status as a NMF. Other schools are still sending her emails and letters about their opportunities for NMF. Some of these schools are super selective schools, so we are still waiting.

@RedbirdDad I’m a NMF going to Vanderbilt next year for CS

@lonetreegrad Some schools have an earlier deadline to have you commit to them as first choice with NMSC, but you can change it later. I know UCF has a much later date than some for that. Good luck with all of those schools you are still waiting on!!!

@txstateomind LOL! We live in No. Virginia and are moving to Charlottesville in two years. Unfortunately, as Hokie fans, my daughter would never have considered UVa. When your son becomes a Hoo, he will understand! So our D is going to Texas while your son comes here.

@Skates76 Thanks. Good luck to your D too.

Sorry @3scoutsmom I goofed…that list is just general for class of 2020 acceptances, not for NMF! Disregard

I do like your idea of a thread listing the schools that NMFs matriculate to.

There is info in the national merit annual report to get a general idea of where NMFs attend college.

(Pg. 38)

Interesting to see. It looks like it only includes those who receive some type of scholarship since total number of attendees by college (page 42) is just over 7,500. So I guess it’s the NMSs not all of the finalists. Good list though. Thanks for the link @gphati

It is all finalists. Some finalists (half) choose to to colleges that don’t sponsor NMS, and I’d they don’t win the $2500 NMS then they don’t get anything.

S is a student in Broward County FL and hasn’t heard anything one way or another either. Maybe tomorrow…

Congrats to all you newly minted NMFs! Wish I could have joined the club…but such is life.

@lcgusa Sorry for your bad fortune. It is hard to see what went wrong for you since another Floridian made it through with a C. Nonetheless, I’m sure that as an NMSF you have lots of options and you will still seize a great opportunity.

@wandlmink Thank you. I’m currently waiting to hear back from some of my top choices in regards to merit aid. Luckily, I got into UF on Friday, but they aren’t very generous with merit aid for in-state students.

lcgusa, did you receive a letter yet, or are you assuming you didn’t receive NMF because you just didn’t hear anything? Do you live in Broward County FL? Son got into UF also. Congrats to both of you! Go Gators!

@suzyQ7 @EpicMom525 In the National Merit Annual Report, the numbers next to the names of the colleges are the number of students who received National Merit Scholarships, either $2500, Corporate-sponsored, or College-sponsored. If the number includes some whose National Merit Scholarships are sponsored by the college, then an asterisk appears next to the number and the number of college sponsored awardees is shown in parentheses. Obviously, colleges who do not sponsor National Merit Scholarships could have many finalists and semifinalists who are not reflected in those numbers.
