***2016 National Merit Finalist Thread***

Posted this in another thread but thought I would try here as well:

Anybody who has been offered a corporate scholarship, are you able to share what your #'s were on the bottom of your application?

CI, % Col, Rank

I am curious about the Rank section. I wonder how they are ranking the applicants before getting high school info (maybe solely going off of PSAT scores). DH’s corp only offers 6 scholarships and DS is ranked “9”. He is not a NMSF, he is only commended.

Thanks!

@What???!! From the University of Miami website:

I believe today is the day that NMSC mails out $2500 scholarship award notifications to the ~2500 Scholars who don’t get official corporate or official school awards. If those Scholars elect to take a better corporate or school award, some additional $2500 scholars will be selected sort of on a wait list basis. But I believe that starting tomorrow we can begin the process of checking mail boxes.

@wandmink
Do you know what happens if the student is undecided in their college choice when these notices are sent?

It’s irrelevant to getting the NMSC awarded scholarship. First choice of college is only a factor in getting an award from a college.

@wandlmink
Thanks for the info!!

My daughter has been accepted to Brown - they don’t participate in the college awards. She does not qualify for the corporate awards.So, do you think she will have a better chance of getting the $2500 NM award? So hopeful (especially given the $68,000/year pricetag at Brown)

I just logged onto my D’s NM account to put in her college choice from undecided and there was a notification that she has won the $2500 scholarship! It showed the letter that was mailed home and it was dated today. So happy for her. I assume that even if she attends one of the schools that will give her money for being a NMF, she will still get the one time $2500.

Oh goodness! Us too!!
Thanks for the info @greeny8 :slight_smile:

@bookmom7 congrats!

Thanks & I forgot to congratulate you too!! <:-P

Thanks for posting that NM posted the info online. Made my DD check and she also received a $2500 scholarship! No money from Johns Hopkins so we will take whatever we can get! Plus it is also a nice acknowledgement of her hard work. Congrats to all and I’m sure everyone on this board and every NMF will do great wherever they end up in college!

Congrats @EpicMom525 ! Yes, it is nice for them to be recognized for all their hard work!

Did anyone else notice the sentence that says “only your immediate family should be told of your selection until May 11”? I was a little surprised they expect everyone to keep it a secret for 5-6 weeks.

The corporate scholarship letters had a similar sentence with an April 20th date.

@4X529s I think the sentence with the May 11 date is there because they expect to have awarded all 2500 NMSC scholarships by that date. Not every student offered one will take it in this first round of awards. A student can only take one official NMSC scholarship whether offered by NMSC itself, a college or a corporate sponsor. The college and corporate sponsor awards tend to be larger or multi-year, so if a student gets one in the next few weeks, the student will reject the NMSC scholarship and they will then award it to an alternate from their list of Finalists. They will probably come out with some press release on May 11, hence the instruction not to discuss.

Usually the kids who are undecided or are attending a non sponsoring university as their first choice are awarded those scholarships because they won’t get a college award.

In response to who is awarded the $2,500 special NMCorp scholarships…

Whether a student has designated or plans to attend a school that offers large, small, or no scholarships to NMF has NOTHING to do with whether the student is awarded the special one time award of $2,500 from NMCorp. It appears to be more dependent upon extremely high stats and not receiving an award from an employer sponsor. Our daughter received the $2,500 Scholar award from NMCorp last year and she had already designated The Univerdity of Alabama as her first choice.

UA offers an exceptional scholarship package to NMF which includes five years of tuition which may be applied toward grad school since she will earn her degree in three years. The only downside is Bama doesn’t allow that award to stack as I have read that some schools do. Still, both UA and NMCorp told us it was an honor and suggested she accept the award so she did.

See Bama’s scholarship package here:

Good luck everyone and ROLL TIDE!

Where are you seeing it? Should it show up on the opening portal page? Might be bad news at our house.

The student has to sign in, then there is a link to click for more information toward the bottom of the box.
