***2016 National Merit Finalist Thread***

Yeah, not seeing that link in my son’s account. Thinking that’s not good news

@Loosabelle Alabama is not allowed to stack your D’s $2500 award with their $3500/year award because both of those are officially from the NMSCorp. It isn’t clear on the link you posted, but I thought Alabama would make up the difference between their college-sponsored $3500/yr*4 = $14000 over 4 years and the one-time $2500 award. That means that a winner of the $2500 one time would get a boost from Alabama’s own funds (outside NMCorp) such that all NMF’s end up with the same amount in the end.

The Alabama link only mentions subsidizing smaller corporate-sponsored awards but I thought in the past it also mentioned supplementing the $2500 one-time awards. @mom2collegekids would know.

@STEMFamily
Yes, UA makes up the difference between the award and the $3,500 stipend. If a student receives this award the UA deducts the amount for the one time award and pays the difference for the first year in the second semester. The award goes back to the full amount for the remaining three years.

I guess we didn’t realize the $3,500 award was also tied to NMCorp.

I believe the NM scholarship offered by OU is handled the the same way as UA.

@greeny8 Thanks for posting. I just checked out that my D received $2,500 as well. I am so proud of her!

@agrimon great news for your daughter! :slight_smile:

Where are you all logging in to see this? I only see that her app is submitted and get a message that she can no longer view the PDF.

@NJFL123 - that is probably what you are seeing when you log in as a parent (that is what I see when I log on to my original site). Your D actually has to log on to her own portal. When you go to the home page- check in the “High Schools & Students” section. Then the “OSA login”- (DS did not remember login or password but, they will send reminders).
Hope this helps!

@greeny8 Thanks! Congrats on your daughter’s winning too!

I thought I read a few pages back (tried to look back but couldn’t find the post) that the $2500 scholarships are given in waves over the next couple of months…and just because some folks are hearing now does not mean everyone else is out of the running for those $2500 awards. Can someone clarify if I am remembering this correctly?

@4kids2graduate -(???) probably post #435- on the previous page- notes that there may be a series of rounds based on which students actually accept what scholarships. (I didn’t phrase it as well as they did!)

@4kids2graduate You are remembering correctly. They should have notified the winners on Thursday. Corporate winners are informed by the corporate sponsors at varying times, and official college awards are announced later. You can only accept one official award, and since the corporate and school awards are usually larger, some of the $2500 award winners will turn down awards to accept corporate and school awards. The $2500 awards will then go to other people later on.

Hi guys - I am relatively new to the party as I have a junior who got a very high PSAT score and I am just trying form plan for next year. So my question is - how do I figure out possible corporate scholarships to apply for? We definitely won’t have an employer scholarship. He is interested in some schools that do not offer aid to NMF.

@What???!! The corporate scholarships for NMF don’t require any additional application, just the one you do when you are named a semi-finalist. We didn’t have the employer factor either, but my son got a corporate award this year anyway, probably largely to do with location as I see this foundation has given their awards before to finalists also from the northern part of our state.

Some corporate-sponsored NMS require that you fill out a separate application form by a deadline and submit it to the corporation. The corporation then submits the information to NMC. If you have a child who took the PSAT and you work for a company that sponsors corporate National Merit awards, you can ask the human resources dept. of your company whether there is a form that needs to be filled out.

Just found out that I’ve received a $2500 NMSC scholarship. Am I correct in saying that this award won’t affect my eligibility for the NM scholarship at Northeastern? I plan on calling them tomorrow to make sure, and I won’t do anything tonight. Just a little confused.

@mukfamily and everyone else

If you know of corporate scholarships that don’t require employment, could you name them. Thanks.

@ nw2this I hesitate to name the one S received because of the notice in the notification letter: “Your high school principal, your first choice college, and your scholarship sponsor are being notified of this offer. Otherwise, only your immediate family should be told of your selection until April 20.” I know posting here is an anonymous sort of situation but don’t want to take chances! In the letter it is referred to as a corporate sponsored scholarship but it is actually a foundation that has a history in a particular company.

Tell us after April 20th:)Meanwhile, can you tell us if you had to apply for it specifically?

He did not apply for it specifically, just did the general requirements for semi-finalists to move on to finalists. It was a nice surprise!
