2017-2018 Art and writing questions

Hey everyone applying to art and writing, this is my first time applying and I am so lost no matter how many emails and FAQS i read haha. I was wondering, does the 200 line count count everything, like spaces included and the title? And am I allowed to register for more than one category? I tried to look this up but all it said is that it differed from region to region which made me really confused. I’m in the Midwest writing region at large I’m pretty sure, but there are no directions on limits of entries. Like can I submit 3 poems or does it have to be a collection? And can I submit a poem and a short story?

Hi! I’m not sure about whether or not the 200 line count includes spaces/titles, but unless you go over or under the line count range, the judges will be pretty lenient/won’t care how many lines your poem is. Also, you can submit for more than one category; you can submit as many entries in as many categories as you want, unless your local region has a specific restriction (I don’t think the region at large’s have any restrictions on number of entries allowed). For poetry, it’s up to you whether or not you want to submit your poems in a collection or as three individual entries. If your poems all have a specific subject matter/theme/style, then I’d say submit them as a collection, but if they’re strong enough individually and are unique from each other, then I’d suggest that you submit them individually. Hope this helps!

Hey guys! I’ll be submitting this year, too (second year and hoping for good results since I’m a senior). Have you guys finished your pieces yet? I’m super behind haha

So the 200 lines don’t count for titles/spaces and you’re allowed to submit as many categories as you want. And as the first poster said, if your poems have a theme then keep them together; otherwise keep them separate as the judges have a scoring rubric they have to follow and one bad egg in the batch lowers the overall score (I learned that the hard way)
I’m finished all of my pieces! I’m submitting 22 things this year (totally not overkill) in hopes of medaling. I’ve gotten 3 silvers, 2 golds, and 4 Honorables over three years and I just really want a medal sighhhh

@shakuton 22!! dangggg I’m super behind (gotta stop procrastinating)… Planning on submitting a collection, as well as a poem and (maybe) 2 sci-fi/fantasy pieces. I would pass out from happiness if I got a medal lol

@Yarnweaver Yeah I’m an overachiever and kinda of want that medal for publicity (I’m publishing a poetry book in May so I’m literally grasping at any opportunity).
I’m doing 12 poems, 2 portfolios, f.f., short story, c.e., memoir, and 2 scripts. Two people in my year’s class have gotten gold medals & a national poet spot so I kind of feel like I need to prove something sigh. At least the Scholastics deadline was later than the youngarts one!

@shakuton omg a poetry chapbook? That’s so cool! Are your portfolios centered around poetry? I was thinking of having a variety for mine (2 poems, 2 short stories, 2 sci-fi/fantasy, and 1 humor).

@Yarnweaver Yeah, my portfolios are only poetry. I made specific themes for my portfolio to play up their content. Variety seems like a good idea; most of the winning portfolios seem to be diverse in content.

Good luck to everyone applying! I’ll be submitting a short story and hopefully a sci-fi/fantasy piece. I was planning on submitting more but procrastination got in the way, lol.

Hey, does anyone know what to do if I didn’t work with an educator on a project? I don’t take art as a class at school so I can’t list anyone for the educator part.

@allyxyz I believe you have to get an educator to sign the form. It shouldn’t really matter who signs it honestly. Just ask a teacher or counselor you’re close with-- if you ultimately end up with a medal, they get like $500 as a prize.

Side note: is anyone else bothering to tag their work? I don’t know if I should because it seems like it really takes away from the pieces. Like cheaply summarizing in a generic word (if that makes sense)…?

Hey guys! If anyone wants to swap poems lmk. I’m working on a Davidson portfolio, but I’ve won 4 Scholastic medals including a silver portfolio and one of the sponsored.

Is anyone tagging their pieces?

@slightlyhopeful I don’t think I am. I honestly don’t really see the point of tagging…
