2017 Lehigh RD Applicants' Discussion Thread

GCmom:

I do not have enough posts to PM, but I am wishing your daughter and you best of luck. Whatever the outcome, I know your daughter is facing good options and wish for her the best.

Thank you so much!!

S just received acceptances today from Boston College and Richmond, was wait listed at Wake Forest, and was accepted to Bucknell last week. Just waiting on Lehigh and Vanderbilt (Vanderbilt’s a high reach)… and I saw on Vanderbilt’s admissions blog even their letters went out today! So Lehigh will officially be S’s last response (didn’t apply to any Ivies). Now that S has been accepted to some phenomenal schools, the reality is setting in that I might not be able to afford to pay for any of them! Any other parents getting that queasy feeling?

Yes! Yocco1 I got 20k at one school and 37k in aid at another but that only covers about half the tuition. I don’t think it is fair to ask my parents to cough up 20k and then me get 15k in loans…as a parent, if you offered to pay a certain amount do you really have the means to do that? (accepted to Syracuse, Union, Boise State, SUU, SJSU, UCSD, Cal Poly SLO, UCSC, and Drexel and waiting on Lehigh, Lafayette, and Cooper Union and rejected from CMcC and Harvey Mudd)

We ensured my son applied to some schools where he was enough above their average admitted student that he would be offered merit aid. So, he’s received enough merit from Case Western, RIT, & Clarkson that we can basically afford it while living just above the pauper level. WPI was his first choice and if he takes a loan, we can probably just pay for it.

We can definitely afford some state schools (Rowan - essentially full ride, SUNY Buffalo, and SUNY Binghamton), but they’re not as high on his list. The other schools - Brandeis, Stevens, RPI, Northeastern - some are so expensive to begin with and others didn’t offer enough to make a dent. We’re simply not going to take out parent loans since we have another child four years behind him AND we’d like to retire in our lifetime.

For the next 15 years we will have a child or two or three in college together. There are 5 more to go after our daughter. We were thrilled with the aid lehigh is giving our her. As far as retirement… dont think that will happen for a long time…

Any word on notifications?

Ouch, Britsmum, I thought we had it bad with two more children after current S. We’ll be tied up for at least ten years. This is why I’m starting to reconsider S looking at some of the state/safety schools who offered him more $$ and less cost. Just not sure paying an extra $20-30K/yr that I don’t have is worth it in the long run - even though I went to Lehigh and would love for S to go there as well! We’ll have to see the package before making any decisions… assuming he gets accepted!

no word of notification

I called and the admissions office said that decisions will be in the mail soon and will be online on Friday at around 5pm

do u know when they sent the mail?

Hi there-

I’ve read that a number of students received what appeared to be likely acceptance letters from specific schools within the university and my son did not. Does that mean he’s less likely to be accepted? I’m so nervous. He was wait listed to a number of really good schools. His ACT super scored was a 32, 30 including writing. He has over 9 AP’s, and a 3.8 weighted GPA. He received scores of 4’s and 5’s on all his AP exams. He has plently of extra curricular (sports and academic clubs), and volunteer work at our local food pantry. According to his counselor, his recommendations were excellent. I know he really wants to go here and the waiting is killing us!

i know what you mean PaMom9. I had similar stats like your son and got rejected to unc chapel hill :(( where else did ur son apply to?

He applied to RPI, Bucknell, Villanova, F&M, and JHU. All of those schools place GPA as one of the most important pieces. According to all I’ve read, Lehigh places more weight on rigor, recommendations and test scores, though the GPA and class rank are considered. If he had taken a less rigorous course load, he could have had a perfect GPA. It just kills me! He also had the added “fun” of being hit by a car as a sophomore and sustaining a serious head injury. He didn’t let it stop him, but I know it impacted his grades.

Hey guys,

I got both the Dean’s letter and a handwritten card from a student at Lehigh (which came in an envelope)…Is that the likely letter everyone’s been talking about?? I’m an international, btw.

Thanks - and the waiting is killing me!!

This wait is painful. I don’t understand the point.

PaMom9

Bucknell and Villanova are notorious this year for waitlisting over-qualified students to try to protect their yield. If you were to take a look at the Bucknell RD Thread, for instance, you would see a bunch of students with equal or better stats than your son’s also getting waitlisted, while many students with lower stats got in. Lehigh doesn’t have a history of doing this (as far as I know), so, for what it’s worth, I am almost positive your son will get into Lehigh.

Actually, Lehigh has been known to waitlist overqualified students IF they showed little interest. I’m sure your son showed interest in the school given your interest right now, so I bet you he’ll be accepted.

I know anecdotal evidence is the worst, but I was also waitlisted from Villanova even though my stats weren’t low for them (2150 SAT, 99/100 GPA, etc). I never visited or emailed or anything. Colleges are very intuitive about interest levels.

What lehigh2017 and vgfanatic said is definitely true.
I got into lehigh early, into their IBE program which has a 20-25% acceptance rate yet I was waitlisted at villanova and rejected to bucknell which I know Im more than qualified for. And I was shocked but then I analyzed it a little more and I never showed any interest to either school, and to some degree, they were right as I probably wouldnt have attended either of them.
A lot of their decisions were based on yield protection.

On your fasfa, schools can also see what other colleges you applied to and I applied to about 15, so upon seeing that Im sure they realized my chances of attending were low.

We went on the official tour (made sure we signed in) and such, so he did show interest. I know that he tried to set up an interview, but was declined, and he may have e-mailed once or twice. I hope that was enough! It will be interesting to see how this goes. He is applying to a highly competitive major(biomedical engineering) at most of them, so that could be it too. The one’s that shocked me were F&M and Villanova (there are no declared majors at F&M and Villanova doesn’t have a direct biomedical engineering program).

Thanks for all the positive feedback! The waiting is definitely the hardest part!
