2018 - 2019 USC Transfer

My daughter was admitted on the portal earlier today. However, as a parent, I was, and still am, very frustrated with the process:

My daughter was not admitted out of highschool last year (high school GPA 3.8, ACT 34, NMF). She was offered a TTP instead.

Trusting the wordings on the TTP and thinking that it would most likely be for just one year, she chose to attend ASU Barrett over in state CCs (California) and other options(big decision, if not successfully transferred, she would most likely have to stay at ASU).

Her first semester GPA was 3.95+ (18 semester units total, A+ for 7 units, A for 8, and A- for 3 units).

In late April, right before she was to take finals at ASU, she unexpectedly learned that a SGR was required for her application.

She submitted her Spring semester grade (4.0 GPA, half of them A+) before May 10 — both an unofficial copy and an official copy. She also emailed the unofficial copy to her counselor but did not recieve any sort of reply.

She waited until May 25 but still heard nothing. On that day, my daughter made a phone call to the admissions office, telling the lady who answered the phone call that she was under TTP, and she had almost perfect GPA. The lady told her to just wait.

An electronic letter was prepared, with May 26 as the stamped date ( of course we did not know on that day).

An email from the provost was received on May 26, the email was addressed to all Fall 2018 incoming students and parents. As she had not been accepted yet, we had mixed feelings and thoughts over the meaning of this email.

On May 29, the admittance letter finally showed up on the portal.

As a parent, I am very frustrated over the process for TTP applicants. Either someone did not do his/her job correctly or the process needs to be streamlined with new protocol.

I submitted my spring grades through the portal today at about 1:00pm. On my portal, it still has the place for me to submit them under required documents. Does anyone know how long it takes to process before my spring grades go under received documents instead of required still???

Also for anyone who may be reading this for future years.

I applied late and was still accepted

@frustratedtrojan omg should I call admissions and tell them about my situation? I’m under TTP as well. I’m just trying to be as patient as I can and hope for a decision by the 31st, but most likely no because my CC ends mid June. I was emailed about SGR back in March and my counselor only mentioned that they’re all aware of that, just send them when I have them. :frowning:

@sushiaddict96 there is a deferral request form you can find online on the USC undergraduate admission page. It has instructions for submitting it to the admissions office .

@scarletred why do you say transfers can only defer for emergencies like medical issue etc? I haven’t seen that written anywhere. Can you elaborate?

@giakhanhngo123 I was accepted in late May to my second choice major in Dornsnife as well! However, my letter never said they would do an additional review of Annenberg applicants. It says “however, if you wish, you may also contact the department of your first choice major to explore the possibility of entry into that program at a later date.” So yeah, we might have different circumstances. But for future reference, you can always request a major change with the paperwork

@redhair55 so the person I talked to at Annenberg admissions said I had to committ to USC before they could go through with the major request change and that they would get back to me within a few days.

Also, @4yourhope when I called today, they said they were sending out the last wave of decisions June 1st. I don’t know exactly what time they will be released, but you have until 11:59 P.M (PST) to commit

I am feeling frustrated cuz I haven’t heard back yet… on the last day, do they release both acceptance and rejection? I worry that all decisions around the last day are rejection… Do I have hope?

Does anybody know, if transfers can still get into classes that are full? There are a few courses that I can’t sign up for (all classes no matter what professor.) I’ve only seen one class with one person above the maximum. Does that mean that they do it from time to time?

@tranferstudent3 I submitted mine on Sunday, but I still have the same thing. I think it either stays there, or only goes away once someone actually takes a look at your files.

@sugarcane1 I was wrong, sorry. There is limited information available about transfer deferrals from USC, but they at least accept the requests. Most institutions are not willing to accept deferrals from transfer students because who they admit in their transfer class is specific to what they need now, not in a year.

@frustratedtrojan I hear ya times ten. I don’t know why they torture them with this long drag out, particularly the TTP kids, who they technically saved a spot for (no offense regular transfers, but they really make some students grovel, I guess cause they can). What I am familiar with from a couple years ago is TTPs hearing back pretty much the same week as regular transfers (or just around May 1) and often without an SGR - especially for those high stat out of HS kids that then got a 3.8+ first semester or even quarter of college.

Maybe the transfers know this…are there many other schools this late in notification? Is this normal? Dont’ know how some of you handle the wait!!!

This year, for the first time ever, I have never seen so many TTPs still hanging out not knowing - several on here and statistically this is a small pool. I think they are gathering here for support cause it has been so long! TTPs made a different choice for their freshman year, not because they had to but because of this opportunity USC presented, so I wish they could throw all of them a bone earlier than they do. I suppose some have grade issues, but I am almost wondering if they are trying to drive some away…maybe enrollment is up too much? Ok, now I sound paranoid, but who knows?

TTP can work fabulously and is a great plan for some, or be a nightmare of stress for others. And don’t get me started on the housing, which I think should be guaranteed for all sophomore transfers including TTP. Many lucky enough to get in early May the last few years were told, sorry, no room at the inn. So hopefully housing has improved for transfers, it seems like more are applying for housing this year, when in previous years they were told not to bother. So maybe it has.

@Vincent1997 They really should open up spots throughout the summer, you can also email your advisor if it is a critical path class. There are work arounds. And you have to keep your eye on the registration page, things randomly open up. But check with your advisor on specific classes.

Oh and heck ya - congrats on choosing USC! You seemed to do a lot of research here and there so it appears you did your due diligence and made a great choice!

A deferral does have to be approved, it isn’t a given, but you can certainly apply - it is a single page form that you submit through your advisor who sends it to the Dean of your school for approval. You do have to explain the reason for deferral, but it isn’t just medical - could be financial, family, etc.

@csumit You are not forgotten! I’m still just waiting to hear about your acceptance.

ok this is too many posts in a row. Was busy working today, so now I am caught up on CC! If I missed a question or PM from anyone, I’m sorry and please ask it again, it’s busy season for me, so a bit distracted.

hey guys! I received my rejection letter a couple days ago from Marshall. Does anyone think I should appeal? I know my app isn’t as competitive as others but I really want to attend USC this fall. I’m a CC transfer with 60+ credits and a 3.55 GPA.

@smbxjr I am sorry to hear about your rejection. Hopefully you still have other great choices. I always believe that you should try, even if the chance is all so small. Realistically, however, the average GPA of people getting into Marshall seems to be between 3.8-4.0 this year. A 3.55 is significantly below that average.

Just for whoever this applies to, I have Samuel Williams as a counselor and he is (according to his e-mail) out of the office until June 4.

What are the chances for USC to rescind an admitted student?
I was admitted for spring as a CS major for viterbi, however my GPA this semester will most likely be 3.0 and overall my GPA will go to 3.5 ish if that happens. As I am taking the hardest class in the physics series(EnM) and the math series(Diff. eq. and linear algebra). And I would most likely end up with a C in EnM. No GPA requirement is in my acceptance letter but I am worried to be rescinded because of my GPA decline.

@uscxdxd I don’t think they’ll rescind it, but I’d definitely try to bring that C up
