@poolsideconvo78 I honestly think the whole spring admit thing is a bit random. It does seem like SGR people would have higher odds of being admitted for the spring semester as they can sometimes wait until mid-July before hearing back. However, I always think of this guy from the 2014 thread that heard back on July 11th (I believe) and not only was he a fall admit, he was a Marshall fall admit. He posted on the stats thread for that year too if anybody wants to check it out.
@jid621 Probably just a glitch - especially if you haven’t turned in grades yet.
@zettasyntax Do you mind sharing what your experience with the upper division writing course was like? I read that the course is geared to the students’ field of study.
@mase31 Sure. There are several versions of WRIT 340 (Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Business). It is recommended that you pick the course that best suits your major (engineers taking the course meant for engineers), but you don’t necessarily have to. In fact, I apparently took the wrong version of the class. Nobody ever seems to know what linguistics is. I was fairly certain that it fell under the social sciences, but was told that it was instead one of the humanities. So I enrolled in the arts & humanities flavor of the course. The professor even asked what I was doing there when I told him my major was computational linguistics. Actually, I remember a pre-med student that was also in the course and she left the class before our first classroom exercise saying something like “I don’t belong here. I don’t know how to write like this”. It was pretty crazy actually. The class wasn’t bad at all. We had to write 4 papers overall. Classroom meetings basically covered a topic that would be the foundation for our next paper. For instance, we covered ethics and our paper had to be on an ethical issue. I did my paper on Genie of Arcadia and both my professor and fellow classmates said my topic was incredible during our group meeting. That’s something else that happens. You have to meet with the professor outside of class with a rough draft and they will offer a critique and what needs to be improved upon. There was also a final presentation that had to be done on your last paper of the course and I bombed that pretty spectacularly. Most people talked for 25+ minutes and I think I clocked in at around 7 minutes. I wound up with a B+. I really wanted an A, but I agree that I didn’t necessarily earn it after my poor presentation. I took the course with Professor Gorski. He was a cool guy and brought pastries on the final day of class. He even told me “You need to work on your shyness. The next time I see you around campus, I want you to say hi first”. I think he really cares about his students. I’m sure other professors for even the same variety of WRIT 340 have their own way of teaching the course, but the one-on-one meetings with the professor outside of class seems pretty standard.
@zettasyntax Thank you for getting back to me! Ooh I see. Professor Gorski sounds like an awesome professor! I really appreciate that the professors offer one on one meetings. During my first semester I had a professor who did the same. At first I was really anxious haha I thought it’d be 30 minutes of “you’re doing everything wrong” but it the opposite. It was really insightful.
@elessar2 How long ago did you get out? There is a time frame after you EAS in which you can apply, I’m just not sure how long that window is (2 years?)
is it normal for the yoUSC portal to only have two tabs on it (join our mailing list, sign up for a campus tour)? Mine keeps saying “if you’ve applied sign in with your email from the common app” which I already did. Will my decision show up here when it’s time, or should I call to make sure they’re linked correctly? (sorry if this is dumb! I’ve been looking for this question on here but haven’t been able to find it)
@ca6882 I tried signing up for the yoUSC portal, and it never worked for me. When I called USC about it, they told me that the USC TR Applicant Portal is where you will get all your updates. The yoUSC portal is for something else, I would assume Freshmen non-transfer.
@mase31 That’s sweet, hah. I remember my Spanish professor in CC brought donuts for National Donut Day, which happened to be the day of our final exam. I finished my exam all fast to make sure I got the donut I wanted, which is a bit sad now that I think about it.
Hi, i have a question about housing! I know the ones in USC village are the best options, and if they show up on my housing option choices, are they technically open or they can be already full? I know they fill up quickly, but i was able to put them in all of my choices. Should I put the other ones like Parkside or Webb just in case they kick me out of housing for choosing all residential colleges? Thank you so much for all the help!!
@chlduwls Transfers aren’t guaranteed housing, so even if you had all non-Village options, there’s no guarantee you would even get housing. Getting Village housing has very slim odds. I really would not count on it. Some people might get lucky, but getting on-campus housing at all should be reason for celebration. Things seem to get worse every year. Back when I first applied, it seems like everybody managed to get at least one of their choices. That doesn’t appear to happen anymore.
