^^^Their new system/database sure is wonky! Thanks for persevering and keeping us up-to-date!
@vpa2019, note that in the UK and Ireland, they admit by course (kind of like a major except you’re restricted to mostly, in Scotland, or only, in England, studying the classes in your course). Most likely the vast majority of courses are filled up.
@PurpleTitan oh I know…my D was accepted to St. Andrews but I was just surprised to see schools like the U of Edinburgh on the list ? and don’t the U.K. schools have application deadlines which are later than the ones in the US?
@vpa2019, I’m not terribly surprised. The top UK unis tend to set pretty high admissions standards/minimums across the board and all of them besides Oxbridge and LSE (Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, and St. A’s too to some degree) have pretty high acceptance rates in many subjects (because if you don’t think you’ll meet a minimum, you don’t bother applying). And some may still be accepting apps (and wouldn’t know how many A-levels test takers would qualify yet). So why not advertise through NACAC?

Interesting article on private schools missing their freshman numbers
Interesting that DePauw is not on the NACAC list.
The University of San Diego and the University of Oregon are suprising to me. :
@sushiritto and Syracuse and Chapman are also surprising
@Marcie123 I missed those. You’re right! Wow.
@gallentjill “I’m really stunned to see Hobart on that list.”
I was also surprised so I looked at some historic data for context.
Last year HWS matriculation data was as follows…
Fall First Year Class of 2022
Applicants: 4435
Acceptance Rate: 63.9%
Yield: 22.5%
Matriculation: 634
Early Decision: 45.6%
Versus 2013 as follows…
Fall First Year Class
Applicants: 4380
Acceptance Rate: 50.0%
Yield: 29.1%
Matriculation: 638
Early Decision: 51.1%
So over 5 years the number of applicants has stayed close to constant but acceptance rates have risen almost 14% to 64% (from 50%) while yield declined from 29.1% to 22.5%. They are also taking a smaller % of the class ED.
I wonder if this year these trends continued or accelerated requiring them to leave admissions open? Anyone know why this trend is occurring at such a highly regarded (test optional) LAC with a $230mm endowment?
Interesting. Like to see admitted versus enrolled stats this year compared to 2013.
I don’t understand why UTD has empty slots available, they do auto-admit admissions and spend a fortune on scholarships. What else they can offer?
I’m not sure why anyone is surprised when large unis can take more. They pretty much always can take more with only (potentially) housing spots for freshmen as the limiting factor (but some of them have a fair number of commuters).
It’s a greater concern when small private LACs don’t meet their enrollment targets as they are counting on the incoming tuition to pay bills.
I expect yields of the non-top schools are lower because more students are applying to oodles of colleges. They can only attend one whether they apply to 4 or 14.
@Marcie123 Chapman only has open spots for transfers although I wouldn’t have been surprised to see them not meet freshmen numbers. We are in the area and Chapman is a school many from my kids’ HS matriculate to. My 2nd child applied and was accepted. I was blown away that the cost of attendance was the same as what we pay for my 1st child to attend NYU.
Hobart had some really bad headlines back around 2014.
And we don’t know if the schools on this list need 1 10 or 100 students. Maybe just need 5 more. It’s not assuredly a sign of sinking ship.
^ Though pretty much all of the rural LACs outside the top tier who haven’t transitioned to being at least partially pre-professionally focused (in their major offerings) are being hit hard.
@PurpleTitan Totally right. It’s a warning sign for some. But it’s a long list. Also as mentioned a school like depauw was on it last year and not this year. Maybe a little better planning.
If on the list, consistently dwindling enrollment, poor endowment or financial rating equals a real problem.
Needed = Leadership change. Academic focus change. Or death spiral for some.
