2020-2021 USC Transfer

@CADREAMIN I enrolled at SMC this spring and aim to apply to USC for Fall 2021. How many credits do you think I should have to have a strong application? I currently am finishing up 16 units. Thanks!

@ON5000 Not negative at all, but I think a lot of students forget that most people pay a lot of money to go to USC or any college. They don’t get aid of any kind, but it’s not like they are bathing in money (those in the middle for sure). The majority of the students at USC are full pay, and then lots of those people are taking out loans so this is a $15k discount for those students. @user_423289 is saying the same thing. It’s a wash for those that have need, but helpful to those that can’t get aid in other ways, but the college has a way to demonstrate their desire to have that student at the school.

Part of the cause for confusion is that people use financial aid and merit aid/scholarship interchangeably and incorrectly. Even the press often gets it wrong. I’ve also seen parents running around saying little junior got a full ride to a school or a full scholarship, when what they got was financial aid or even a combination like we are talking about. Just different ways to get to there!

@CADREAMIN - If I do decide to appeal, what is the process in terms of how long it takes the Admission Committee to 1) review the appeal and 2) notify you of denial or admission? TYIA

@transfer2024 There is no formal process or admissions committee scheduled for transfer appeals, you email your advisor a letter with new information that is reason for reconsideration. I believe @zettasyntax heard in August. It has do with how on it or interested the advisor is and how busy etc. We have seen a couple be successful over the years, but most years zero transfer appeals are over-turned. But if you have a good case, go for it! Can’t win if you don’t play. Hope for the best, but don’t hold yourself hostage waiting, keep moving forward. It should be significant achievements or news, things like a rise in gpa for this one semester or professing eternal love for USC aren’t gonna be a game changer. Good luck!

@CADREAMIN - Thank you! One last question, in addition to submitting the appeal on the portal, are you suggesting I should also notify my USC counselor or my CC counselor? Again - I appreciate the help!

So, I’ve submitted my fall admit reply form and got my myUSC account activated. Do I just sit and lay back and wait for orientation to know about what else to do?

@CADREAMIN do you if the transfer orientations this summer will be online?

Can anyone tell me what days they usually give out responses? I don’t want to be sitting around all day checking every five minutes lol

No - You cannot submit your appeal on your portal.

Only way for a Transfer to appeal is by sending an email to your USC academic counselor. Email should contain your new information that was not included in your application as your reason for reconsideration.

@tranfer2024 ^^^^ that. It appears the transfer button was (mistakenly?) left on from regular admissions, but does not actually work or was just disabled for transfers.

@NonTraditional2 & @CADREAMIN - that information is false, on my portal (after receiving a rejection) there was a button I could select for an appeal. If I clicked the button - all of my information was immediately populated: name, address, DOB, ID number etc. Below that was an box to select the document/appeal you plan to submit:

Please upload your Appeal of Admission Decision below

I was able to submit my appeal VERY easily and received this message:

The following files have been uploaded:

05/26/2020 - USC appeal.docx - 1 page(s)

I then received an e-mail IMMEDIATELY in my e-mail from USC with this response:

Your Admission Appeal has been received and added to your admission file.

So with that said, do I also need to notify my USC admission counselor?

Thank you (again)!

Thank you for that update. My concern is the computer may have a glitch thinking you are a Freshman & not a Transfer even though your unique information populated. I strongly urge you to also email your USC academic counselor with your appeal document just to cover your bases. It will only help you by being redundant.

That’s great @transfer2024, but totally agree with @NonTraditional2 , no one else has been able to use that button (anyone else find it works?). So just to be sure your letter doesn’t end up in a file that no one looks at, yes, be sure to connect with your advisor.

Let’s see…any other transfer able to appeal through portal?

On my FAST portal, it says “We are unable to determine a status for you at this time, please contact us.” What does this mean?

that’s weird…I would go ahead and contact them. Probably just a glitch in the system. Anyone else have this problem?

@alwayshp394 & @CADREAMIN - My counselor just confirmed that if I received an email confirmation from The Office of Admissions, I am all set! Just a FYI! Keeping good thoughts!

That’s great! Good luck this year!

Anyone in here experienced with financial aid? I got a request last week for my parents and I’s tax info, and now they sent an income & expense declaration form to me. Would it still be 4-5 days after submitting for me to get a finalized response?
Also, did I get this because I’m low income?
I’m waiting for my FA package to come in before I commit so it’s making me a little nervous;;;

I think they finally created a system for transfers to “formally” submit an appeal because I am also able to upload my appeal letter through the portal. Like what @transfer2024 said, once you click on the button, information such as your name, DOB and email is populated, and you are given a space to upload your appeal letter. It also explicitly states at the top that it is for Fall 2020 Transfer so I think this is how they’re doing things this year!

My withdraw option is gone. Decisions may be coming today!
