2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

If we EA weren’t deferred then why are decisions coming to applicants who applied after 11/1?
Sigh. We will all get answers eventually but sheesh

I really think applications are placed in buckets depending on location, financial needs and majors… it all depends on your pool of applicants your in

@ziveli513 Decisions are coming to applicants who applied after 11/1 because all the applications that they didn’t get to review were dumped in with the after 11/1 applicants and applications are being randomly selected for review. This is what admissions told me on the phone. So, it makes no difference when you applied at this point.

As of mid-January, my daughter’s August application had NOT been reviewed at all, as per admissions. She and many others were not really deferred. Penn State just didn’t have a chance to look at their applications. That’s not really a deferral, and they shouldn’t have even used the word.

In contrast, she was ACTUALLY deferred (early action to regular) last week from a well-respected university. They had clearly reviewed her application and just want to see her mid-year grades, which are stellar. That’s a true deferral. Penn State was not.

@airway1 I do understand that from what we have read
But if a wait list has formed, how is it at all possible that some applicants are just out of luck if their application got into a busy bucket?
Is it possible that students who applied in August are buried in a bucket
And then when that application is finally retrieved, oops!
Your major is filled with people who applied weeks and weeks after you
With lower stats
But u were in a bucket?
Forgive me, not barking at you but this is what we keep getting told and it just doesn’t make sense
Why would students get wait listed and others get in?

@ziveli513 I agree I don’t get this rolling admissions… they really need to work on it better… to me it seems like they are also managing the yield game. I don’t even get this waitlist… I think it’s for applicants they want to send to regional campuses

I guess it’s so complex it’s difficult to really grasp each detail and each individuals case
And yes terms like deferred are used with different shades of meaning by psu it seems
@airway1 and @vamom4
I hear u ?

@ziveli513 as more community college merge with four year colleges (Wisconsin and Georgia State) we will see more of this headache

@airway1 yikes. Glad this is my one and only d off to college
By the time my grandchildren are ready for college it will all be virtual
Or put on a helmet and get all the knowledge one needs instantly
Gene Roddenberry foresaw that tool in the 1960s
Live long and prosper all lol

ADMITTED!!!

Major: DUS
Date: 1/30/19 at 12:00am
UWGPA: 3.46
WGPA: 4.17
SAT: 1290
FALL 2019 UNIVERSITY PARK

@LM3232 That’s because a 4.0 at one school is not at all equal to a 4.0 at another school. If my daughter got all 90% at her high school, that would be a B and a 3.0. At the school up the road, a 90% is an A and a 4.0. That’s why chance threads are so difficult. Add in honors, AP, IB classes etc and it’s impossible for us, without access to the full application, to make a determination on who actually had the higher stats.

@marie2001 at last!!! Congrats !!!

@vamom4 I have to say after rereading your postt about your daughters august application not being reviewed at all until mid-January as told to you by Admissions and now being “dumped” in with priority review applicants post 11/1 is my worst nightmare
“Penn state just didn’t get a chance to look at applications” from August?
That sounds horrible
And true
And again how can that be fair to the August applicant if majors are “almost full” at UP which someone else reported admissions saying 1/24
Smh

@jlhpsu Again, good points. No matter how much I try to let my logic and smart mind work at this, I still feel hurt by how this has gone. So disappointed, disillusioned. My feelings may not match what my intellect says, but my feelings are winning. Sadly. And then the peanut butter chips are winning… Boo!

Sorry if this has been asked somewhere in the 2000 posts in this thread :). But, has anyone been outright turned down by PSU yet? I know people may not post if that was the case but just wondering if all of those being turned down are going to get notified tomorrow or if they have been notifying people all along? My DS is still “under review”.

I am still under review! I applied to UP Smeal. Feeling: Scared & Nervous.

@snickers1234 I have wondered same because I haven’t seen any posts that I recall from this thread back to when it started in November 2018 that had actual denied
Or the decisions only thread though I read that less often?
My d ea ap still under review @2019college123 and I am feeling same

I 100% recommend reapplying for DUS or changing your major if you feel nervous about competitive majors (I switched from Smeal to DUS)

what kind of school gives a 90 percent 3.0? That’s ridiculous.

Great Scot !! PSU closed for a day, Polar Vortex creating yet another bump in a ridiculously poorly handled EA decision process. What next, a pack of rabid dogs eating the admissions office’s buckets of 12.22 deferrals? Malaware zeroing out the application date on all remaining EAs? hahahaha, what a saga, can’t make this up, got to laugh and take in stride.

to all those EA who got in, CONGRATS ! To the rest of us poor saps, hang in there, hopefully it is a matter of days. GOOD LUCK !

ps, my DD gave up on checking these boards and the PSU portal, said to me last week, dad just tell me when it (the decision) happens, I sort of don’t care at this point and I know you do. Yep, I am all wrapped up in it now ! ha!:slight_smile:

@gmancc ???best laugh yet. Thanks!
Rabid dogs lolololol
It realllllly is cold here and going to minus 18 tomorrow am!
