@vamom4 sorry to hear that your D received bad news. The nursing program is so uber-competitive and I think it is smaller than some other programs. Sounds like it is a bit of a relief and she has some other great options?
I wonder if - for nursing - they held all applications until priority? It is such a small program that they may have wanted to see their entire pool? Or if the kid was at the tippy top (or the bottomy bottom), they received an early answer, but everyone else was held to see where the âlineâ was?
@vamom4 U started the decisions only thread!
Sorry for the final result, thank you so much fir sharing the details and your analysis
And your advice for future applicants!
Wishing you and your d all the best, so sorry again because I agree with your conclusion With her stats Iâm sure you have other great options lined up. Let us know when and if you feel like it, would love to hear whatâs next for yâall
@ukexpat88 not trying to be argumentative, my d applied 8/6, app was complete and under review since 8/15. Got âdeferredâ 12/22. Thatâs all, your case as u said he wasnât reviewed until January but somehow psu managed to review and decide
Of course Iâm so sorry didnât get result hoped for at first. Glad u have other offers! and as u said no ties to psu.
No Heartfelt ties like we do hence my angst still no decision when so many many who applied after have. Best wishes for bright future
She is focusing on Case Western Reserve & Delaware as her main options. Waiting on Clemson. Properly deferred by UVA and will hear in late March. Thatâs her top choice if she can get in, but the in-state acceptance rate for nursing is only 14%.
Regarding your comment: âI wonder if - for nursing - they held all applications until priority? It is such a small program that they may have wanted to see their entire pool? Or if the kid was at the tippy top (or the bottomy bottom), they received an early answer, but everyone else was held to see where the âlineâ was?â
Not sure, but a girl she knows with significantly lower SAT scores, far less rigor, lower GPA and class rank, less impressive extra-curriculars, who applied later, was admitted to nursing in mid-January. (Thus prompting our call to admissions to make sure my daughterâs application was not lost. At that time, admissions said that my daughterâs application had not been looked at and was waiting to be randomly selected for review and decision.)
Also, if they HAD reviewed all the nursing applicants at the same time, when they sent out decisions in mid-January about acceptances to UP, they should have ALSO been able to send out her denial to UP/admittance to Altoona decision. But no, they didnât post her decision until this morning.
@vamom4 Iâm sorry you didnât get the news you wanted. Weâre in the same boat so it seems. And I completely agree with your assessment of the entire process.
@lucyvanpelt, in my sonâs case we actually do know that he wasnât reviewed at all until January. His application was still in verification (not review) until Jan 3, and we confirmed the situation with admissions. So I canât speak to othersâ circumstances but can certainly speak to our own.
@vamom4 Reading on decisions only thread about your daughter stats and ECs she is obviously an outstanding student and all around person, you must be very proud! And that she wants to be a nurse says everything about her
The story in your post here just now is stunning. âNot sure, but a girl she knows with significantly lower SAT scores, far less rigor, lower GPA and class rank, less impressive extra-curriculars, who applied later, was admitted to nursing in mid-January. (Thus prompting our call to admissions to make sure my daughterâs application was not lost. At that time, admissions said that my daughterâs application had not been looked at and was waiting to be randomly selected for review and decision.)â
Iâm just so disappointed for your daughters experience applying to psu EA in August!!!, and for all in same boat
Not the psu that we here in pa revere for so many other good reasons
The word ârandomâ repeated many times by psu admissions and veterans posting here is inexplicable and imo indefensible
We see that majors are filling up and students who applied august havenât even been reviewed until January according to admissions themselves
Though we will still read many going forward who are diehard defenders of this random process just because it is what it is at penn state
@spqr70nj Thankfully, thereâs a good chance that a lot of decisions are already made just not updated in the portal yet. Since its the 31st, one would imagine most of the decisions are already made by now anyway. Making a decision on the 31st would be cutting it extremely close. I just hope the portal automatically updates and its not a manual update by the admissions office.
We heard branch campus for 2 then UP. Our family was not impressed with deferring children especially when they had an early release date for EA. Children got their apps in on time! You donât defer a whole group of students just because your admissions department canât get to them. Hire more staff then. My opinion was there was a rush to get them done by 1/31. Iâll pay to send my child elsewhere! Happy for children who got into UP but I was not impressed with the process at all.
@ziveli513 ty for the kind word! We needed some humor
@Psumom23, we appreciate the info but satellite campuses were never a consideration. My DD is blessed with many options and while PSU UP was a top choice at the beginning of the application process back in September. Our HS send approx 35 kids per year to PSU UP, she had visited many times last year so understandable her infatuation with the school.
Just llike for @vamom4 daughter PSU UP sadly faded and dropped down the list as other schools accepted her in December and all with varying degrees of sholarships. Matter of fact she has already begun to withdraw her application acceptences from 5 schools and a few mor are to follow shortly, as posted in the Nursing school thread.
Someone somewhere mentioned once that our kids will find a place that wants them as much as the want to be there and it will all work out fine.
Good luck and I hope everyone gets to have an incredible college experience at PSU or wherever it may be!
No where on the portal does it give my daughter the option to decline admission. I even searched on the website and it says to decline admission via the portal, but there is no place to do so.
We are going to send an email to admissions.
I wonder how many who were accepted, but not planning to attend, havenât declined their offer due to lack of clear way to do it?
@vamom4 I agree and donât see it either. In addition, I posted it earlier but there is no means of updating the SRAR when someone else posted that they updated their childâs senior grades. Lots of inconsistencies.
@vamom4, @Gmancc , If nursing is really your kidâs passion, take whatever direct entry program you can getâŠall PSU lovinâ aside. Itâs so difficult to gain entry into these programs and itâs a miracle if you get more than one. Your kids sound like they have options so they should be proud of that. Kudos to them, even if it means PSU isnât in their future. Nursing at Penn State is ridiculously competitiveâŠI couldnât imagine trying to apply this year with the big bump in applications.
@CalinAmry I have seniors in two different high schools and at one a 90 is an A- (3.7) and at the other a 90 is a B+ (3.3). At one school you need a 93 for an A (4.0) and at the other you need a 94 to get an A (4.0). At one school, a 98 is an A+ (4.3) and at the other a 100 is still just an A (4.0). These two schools are both private, college prep, single sex schools that are 5 minutes from each other. That said, you cannot compare my daughterâs GPA fairly with her brothersâ GPAs because the grading scales are so different. Also, some schools limit when and how many AP classes you can take and how much credit you get for taking them. GPA comparison is almost impossible, imho.
@lucyvanpelt I donât think a person has to have a âconspiracy theoryâ to think things donât APPEAR fair this year. To have a conspiracy theory one would have to think that this was planned in advance by some group hoping to mess with our minds and NO ONE that I have seen on this forum has called anything that has happened here âintentional.â
In my opinion, PSU admissions, if anything, has appeared to lack intentional planning.
As for your final question to @ziveli513, I suspect the D doesnât want to know. Donât ask, donât tell. Easy peasy. I myself am sharing with my son and it is making him MORE miserable. I still am finding good advice here though, even though heâs on the wait list. I share whatever is relevant with him. I think some other posts have indicated kids donât want to know until the snail mail comes.
@vamom4 Smart advice! Makes COMPLETE sense. This, combined with what someone else just wrote about wait listed kids making sure their latest grades get in⊠MIGHT help my wait listed son. Thank you! Sorry you donât like the result you got though.
@vamom4 Living in the vicinity of Case Western Iâd like to throw in she would get a GREAT education there. They are affiliated with University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and for years and years if you had a sick child that was the only place you considered going. Since then, there has been a lot of competition with the Cleveland Clinic and for years they have advertised their services for children, while UH has reached out to adults. Whatever else anyone may say about Cleveland (and I am not an OH native) we have TREMENDOUS medical care here compared to a lot of the country. She might also find a great job here after graduation. I canât speak to the other schools you mentioned. I think people who actually end up in or around Cleveland donât find it nearly as unappealing as Clevelandâs reputation suggests.
